Writing of application letters 求职信的撰写An application letter typically accompanies each resume you send out. It may make the difference between obtaining a job interview and having your resume ignored, so, it makes good sense to devote the necessary time and effort to writing effective application letters. The letter has a number of purposes: It allows you to sell yourself by pointing out key features of your CV. It gives you the opportunity to include material that is not in the CV, especially personal qualities that you listed when making your preparations. It shows a prospective employer that you know how to write a letter. While this may be of decreasing importance in an electronic age, many employers still value it highly, both as a skill in its own right and as a test of your ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Sample 1 An application letter for Job WantedDear Sir/Madam,I have seen the position advertised recently in the Washington Post, and I would like to apply to work in your travel agency this spring.I have some experience of secretarial and office work. After graduating from college, I worked for a lawyer firm, where I had secretarial training and learned how to type at a fast speed and to use a computer. I have also worked as a personal assistant for the department director in an advertisement company, so I am used to dealing with people and helping with problems.I have visited France and Italy several times, and know many of the main tourist areas in both countries. I speak French fluently, and I have a basic knowledge of Italian. I have always been interested in travel and I have a good sense of geography.I am a friendly and confident person, and I think I would enjoy working for you.I am looking forward to hearing from you.Yours faithfully, Sample 2 An application letter of a graduate.Dear Mr. Hill,I have learned from a friend that there is a vacancy for a graduate biologist with a three years experience in the pharmacy industry in your company. I would like to apply for the position wanted. As the enclosed resume shows, I am well experienced in the research and development in the field in which your company specializes. Your company s products and rapid growth have interested me for a long time.I think that my present job does not provide me enough space for my overall development, and I would be very appreciative of an opportunity for an interview.Yours sincerely, Sample 3 Application for a Position of a ProgrammerDear Mr. Wang,Since Microsoft is a fast-growing company. you are likely in need of young and energetic people with a good knowledge of computers. and would like to join your company as a programmer. From the attached resume, you can see that I have learned several programming courses and the scores suggested that I have got profound theoretical knowledge about programming. In the past two years, I have written about a dozen of research papers, two of which were published in the Journal of Xiamen University. Last week I was informed that my graduation thesis has been chosen as Excellent Graduation Papers. In addition to my university courses, I have had work experience in programming and operating computers. Last summer I demonstrated a program at the Fujian Software Development Show. An industrial organization immediately realized its value and bought it without hesitation. At your convenience, I would like to meet you to discuss how my qualifications could benefit Microsoft, I am looking forward to joining your efforts to make Microsoft a more profitable organization.Sincerely yours, Chen Lan Enclosure: 1. My resume2. My academic record3. Two letters of recommendation C. Preparing for a Job Interview (面试的准备)During the job interview, you have the opportunity to sell yourself to the prospective employer. Make the most of it by planning ahead.Your Homeworkl Prepare a current neatly typed resume tailored to the position to leave with the interviewer.l Have someone with a critical eye proofread the resume. l Prepare answers to broad questions about yourself (review your strengths and weaknesses). l Obtain permission in advance from people you intend to use as reference. l Read about the community in which the position is located. l Read about the employer, what they do, their problems and future plans (annual reports, organizational charts, policies and procedures, staff manual, and job description of the position being interviewed for). Preparing a Good ResumeA resume is your representative to the job screening committee, and it should make a statement that expresses you and what you are. Since there is no standard way to prepare a resume, your resume must be able to indicate what you can do for the employer and show your overall preparation for the position. A resume should contain the following information but not necessarily in the order listed: l Your name, address, and telephone number(s). l Employment objective. Indicate the type of job you are seeking. The objective should be relevant to the position you are seeking. l Education: school name and location, graduation date or dates of attendance, degree obtained or highest grade completed. l Experience: indicate job title, name and address of employer, dates of employment, and description of job duties. l Special skills possessed: computer skills, languages, awards received, any accomplishment that is worth mentioning etc. l Indicate availability of references (usually upon request). Prepare for the Day of the Interviewl Dress for the position. l Be conservative but not prudish. l Be neat. Check for missing buttons, dragging hems, split seams, etc. l Avoid jangling jewelry or new wave fashion. l Appear fresh and rested, interested and alert. l Arrive promptly for your appointment. l Bring with you some identification (drivers license, state issued ID, etc). Your Conduct During the Interview or the Selling Gamel Be positive about your qualifications. l Avoid judgmental remarks about previous jobs or bosses. l Learn the names of your interviewers and their positions in the organization. l Indicate areas of the job to which you can apply previous experience and training. l Be creative in describing your skills and relating them to a new job. l Note that the employer wants answers to the following questions: Why are you here? What can you do for the employer (special skills, background)? How much would it cost to hire you? The Curtain Call or Closing the DealSend a follow-up letter thanking the interviewers for their time and interest in you. And restate your interest in the position and the organization. E. Materials for communication in an interview (面试表达用语)1. Example Job Interview Questions and Answers When you walk in the room the very first impression you make on the interviewer can have a great influence on the rest of the interview. It is important that you introduce yourself, shake hands, and are friendly. The first question is often a breaking the ice (establish a rapport) type of question. Dont be surprised if the interviewer asks you something like: l How are you today? l Did you have any trouble finding us? l What do you think of the weather lately? Dont be surprised by the friendly tone. The interviewer wants to put you at ease (help you relax). Answer the question without going into too much detail. The language you use should be simple but polite, for example; l How are you today? GOODIm fine thank you, and you?Im well thank you. BADSo, soOKNot so wellWhat is most important? Talking about your experience and credentials (qualifications) is the most important part of any job interview. Your qualifications include your education from High School on and any special training you may have done in the past. Your experience is any work that you have done that is directly or indirectly related to the job you are applying for.EducationRemember that your education took place in the past. Therefore you need to use the past tenses, for example:I attended the University of Helsinki from 1987 to 1993.I graduated with a degree in agricultural planning.Etc.If you are currently a student you should use the following present tenses:I am currently studying at the University of New York and will graduate with a degree in Economics in the spring.I am studying English at the Borough Community College.Etc.Remember to include any training you may have had when talking about your education. This includes any computer training, correspondence courses, etc. Make sure to mention your English studies. This is very important as English is not your first language and the employer may be concerned about this fact. Assure the employer that you are continuing to improve your English skills by any courses you may be taking, or by saying that you study a certain number of hours a week to improve your skills.Experience and QualificationsWork experience is by far the most important topic of any job interview (at least in the United States and Britain). Therefore, it is
