AMany years ago my student asked me the question, Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach? Without taking time to reflect, I answered, Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someones life. Even though I was honest, that wasnt a very good answer and my student didnt let it slide. Let me get this straight, he said, You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone? He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. Im one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift. Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach: Its in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors. Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until they reach the shore. You cant have ripples without a stone. Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and thats what I strive to do. I genuinely love teenagers. I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life, I want to do so. If theyll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too. Teaching isnt for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.21. Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writers being a teacher? A. Because he thought her answer was unbelievable. B. Because the writer was insincere. C. Because the student was naughty. D. Because the answer was difficult to understand.22. What do you think of the writer? A. Stupid. B. Honest. C. Conservative. D. Polite.23. According to the text, which of the following is NOT true? A. The writers mother has the greatest influence on her. B. The writers answer made the student confused. C. In the writers opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach. D. The writer annoyed the student who asked the question.24. Whats the main idea of the text? A. A students silly question. B. A good teacher who likes students. C. The reason why I teach.D. A confused student.BMargaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building. She got trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have liked to go back to it , but the shifts(工作班次)are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.” So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just 90, before tax and insurance. “Its better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work unsocial hours should get a bit extra.” The hours shes chosen to work mean that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesnt think that puts any pressure on their relationship. Her work isnt physically very hard, but its not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps theyd be a bit more careful.” The fact that shes working all night doesnt worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since Ive got to be here, I try to enjoy myselfand I usually do, together with the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.” Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think youre a cleaner because you dont know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what Id been doing, but I dont think that way any more. I dont dislike the work though I cant say Im mad about it.”25Margaret quit her job as a nurse because _Ashe wanted to earn more money to support her familyBshe had suffered a lot of mental pressureCshe needed the right time to look after her childrenDshe felt tired of taking care of patients26Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because _Athey never clean their offices Bthey look down upon cleanersCthey never do their work carefully D. they always make a mess in their offices27When at work, Margaret feels _Alight-hearted because of her fellow workers Bhappy because the building is fully litCtired because of the heavy workload Dbored because time passes slowly28The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margarets parents would _Ahelp care for her children Bfeel disappointed with herCshow sympathy for her Dregret what they had saidCJoin the discussion Lake Lander 2 hours agoToday, a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset. I wonder how he would react if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train. I have never had the courage to do it, though. Pak50 57 minutes agoWhy not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brian is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn(号) and started to practice.Angie OEdema 42 minutes agoI dont see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Dont do to others what you wouldnt like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and apologised to me. When his phone rang again later, he left his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better.Taodas 29 minutes agoI did read my newspaper out loud on a train, and it turned out well. The guy took it in good part, and we chatted happily all the way to Edinbergh.Sophie 76 13minutes agoI have not tried reading my newspaper out loud on a train, but ,several years ago, I read some chapters from Harry Porter to my bored and noisy children. A reportDIts wonderful to go to another country, complete a volunteer project and feel that you really have a positive influence. But how can you become an international volunteer? * Plan practically. Contact(联系) the organization a few months before leaving and find out if there are materials which are rare and hard to get for the project. What you often consider plentiful here, such as nails or hammers, is in great need in other parts of the world. * Do the project together, not on your own. You are a guest in the community(社区). The most successful result is not that you build something and walk away, but that you and community build something as a team. Share skills and build together. * Be flexible. Not everything is going to happen as planned. Often the other country doesnt have the right tools, manpower, transportation or funds to get all the needed work done. In a word, they lack infrastructure(基础设施). * Contact the people in the community. Often you will have “downtime” outside the range of the project. Rather than move back to the group with whom you traveled, be sure to spend time with the people of the community. Listen to the things about their lives. If you cant speak the language, smiles work wonders. And you will be surprised you will find a way to community. Volunteering is a special and life-long experience for everyone involved(参与的). Be prepared that the person who may be changed most is you. Its a joyful, often careful experience which will encourage you to view yourself, your neighbors and your world quite differently.33. But when the test comes, suddenly you feel so nervous that you cant answer those questions you knew the answers to just last night.36 Test anxiety is a nervous feeling that people sometimes get when theyre about to take a test. Feeling ready to meet the challenge can keep test anxiety at a manageable level.1. 37 Stress is a signal that helps you prepare for something important thats about to happen. So use it to your advantage. Instead of reacting to the stress by panicking or complaining (抱怨), take an active approach. 38 After all, nobody ever feels stressed out by thoughts that they might do well in a test.2. Be prepared. Many students find that their test anxiety is reduced when they start to study better. It makes sense. 39 Having confidence going into a test means you expect to do well. When you expect to do well, youll be able to relax into a test.3. Accept mistakes. You may have even heard teachers refer to mistakes as “learning opportunities”. Learning to tolerate small failures and mistakes is a valuable skill.40 Although it wont go away overnight, facing and dealing with test anxiety will help you learn stress management, which will be helpful in many situations besides taking tests.AUse a little stress to your advantage.BLet stress remind you to study well in advance of a test.CThe more tests you take, the less test anxiety you will have.DIf this sounds like you, you may have a case of test anxiety.ETest anxiety will disappear if you have learned all the material.FThe more you know the material, the more confident you will feel.GEverything takes time and practice, and learning to beat test anxiety is no different.第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。Dario and his mother loved their new apartment.
