He never changes his mind after he makes it, which sometimes makes him seem too stubborn. My dads strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm. His dad was bad-tempered, and he would get angry enough to throw wooden boards at my dad when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores(家务杂事) done and walk to school so that he would make it to basketball practice by five.Through all of the duties my dad had at home, he played three sports and went to school on top of it. School would have been easy, but my dad had dyslexia(读写困难)which made it nearly impossible for him to read. Since dyslexia wasnt recognized back then, every teacher my dad had passed along thinking that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took the time to sit down and teach him how to read and write. The best part about my dad is his attitude toward daily life. Even though he likes things once right, he also knows how go to with the flow and have a good time. My dad doesnt worry about things he cant control. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts on a smile on his face because he knows family is a lot more important than any other things.I know that I get my best qualities from my parents and the way they raised me. My dad has shown me that with discipline and hard work I can achieve anything, and have fun while doing it.24. Which can we infer about the writers father from the first paragraph?A He always got angry easily.B He was not good at doing his chores.C He had a bad relationship with his father.D He liked playing basketball when in high school.25What does the underlined word “struggled” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A tried hard B hurried upC turned away D gave in26According to the text, when at home, the writers father is always _.A cheerful and relaxed B strict and seriousC busy and tired D humorous and funny27What can be learned about the writer from the last paragraph?A He hopes his father will not be too strict with him.B He is very grateful to his father.C He has achieved much success in life.D He has a hard time at school just like his father.CIn their book Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide to Sustainable living, Robert and Brenda Vale say keeping a medium-sized dog has the same ecological influence as driving 10,000 km a year a 2.0 liter car.“Were not actually saying it is time to eat the dog. Were just saying that we need to think abut and know the ecological influence of some of the things we do and that we take for granted.”Constructing and driving the jeep for a year requires 0.41 hectares(公顷)of land, while growing and manufacturing a dogs food takes about 0.84 hectaresor 1.1 hectares in the case of a large dog such as a German shepherd.Convincing flesh-eating cats and dogs to go vegetarian for the fate of the planet is a non-starter, the Vales say. Instead they recommend keeping “greener” smaller, and more sustainable(可持续的)pets, such as goldfish, chicken or rabbits. The books playful title, and serious suggestion that pet animals may be usefully “recycled”, by being eaten by their owners or turned into pet food when they die, may not appeal to animal fans. Annoying as the idea may be, the question is valid given the planets growing population and limited resources, Robert Vale said.“Issues about sustainability are increasingly becoming things that are going to require us to make choices which are as difficult as eating your dog. Its not just about changing your light bulbs or taking a cloth bag to the supermarket,” he said.“Its about much more challenging and difficult issues,” he added. “Once you see where cats and dogs fit in your overall balance of things, you might decide to have the cat but not also to have the two cars and the three bathrooms and be a meat eater yourself.”28What does the Vales book mainly focus on?A The animals rights.B The way to raise pets.C The influence of driving cars.D The environmental protection. 29What does the underlined phrase “the idea” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A Teaching animal fans. B Recycling pet animals.C Killing animals for food. D Protecting homeless animals30What do the Vales think of creating a sustainable life?A Easy. B Inspiring. C Impossible. D Challenging.31What can we infer from the text?A Taking a cloth bag to the supermarket is difficult to carry out.B Raising sheep is a good idea for animal fans in the Vales opinion.C The bigger pet animals are, the worse ecological influence they have.D Driving cars is more environment-friendly than keeping pet animals.DHave you ever accidentally walked into the wrong place that end up changing your life? Thats what happened to Maceo Thomas of Lakewood, Colorado. One night, Maceo left his home to find a store where he could buy a back staff cane (拐杖). He weighed over 300 pounds. His doctor, concerned about his health, had suggested Maceo try yoga (瑜伽). But Maceo could barely walk, needing to use a cane to get around. He entered what he thought was the right store-only to find black belts instead. Hed walked into the hall of the Rocky Mountain Karate Association. Hale Hilsabeck, owner and director of the studio, greeted him. Maceo told Hale hed always wanted to learn karate (空手道), but was discouraged because of his weight. Hale told him to come back the next day to begin learning karate and boxing-free of charge.Maceo began training two to three times, a week. This all happened for a reason, he told me. Most of all, his faith was renewed, both in himself and in a higher power. Maceos story inspired me. Next time I ended up in a “wrong place”. Maybe I will stay there a minute longer-to see if that unexpected opportunity shows up.32Whats Maceos problem?A He didnt buy a cane. B He is too fat.C He cant walk at all. D He doesnt like yoga.33Why hadnt Maceo learnt karate before he met Hale?A Because she hadnt been interested in it. B Because his doctor told him not to do it.C Because it was very expensive.
