If that is the definition(定义) of “successful”, then I am truly successful after failure. I started dabbling(涉足) in Internet marketing in October 2010. It didnt take long for me to become a victim(受害者) of the “become-a- millionaire(百万富翁)-overnight” (1) that was so popular on the Internet. I had supposed that selling things on the Internet was so (2) that even beginners could start making money on the very (3) day. I spent most of my time advertising rather than learning how to advertise. However, half a years hard work (4) no money at all. In June, I found a program that was of great value, and I began to learn from it. It wasnt long before I (5) the “get-rich-quick” mind. I began to (6) that the Internet sale is a profession(职业) like any other profession and I would have to take it (7) . I kept trying to cheer myself up, which I thought was the key (8) success in sales. I insisted on the excellent Internet marketing and then good (9) came. My dabbling became a hobby, and the passion(热情). Later passion (10) my business. I have really become a millionaire within a year. The more I learn, the more I realize I need to learn more. However, a new map, called the Authagraph World Map, might replace the old maps. It recently won Japans 2016 Good Design Award. It surprised many because earlier winners of the important award have been things like robots and mobility chairs. But this map is very special, because the maps you have used at school are not completely accurate(准确). This is because it is difficult to copy the 3-D spherical surface(球面) of the world onto a 2-D map. Bodies of water and land are distorted(变形) because of this. It means places like North America looks the same size as Africa, even though Africa is much bigger. Similarly, Alaska looks bigger than Brazil, even though Brazil is more than five times bigger in real life. Many people have tried to fix this problem, but until now they havent been successful. The AuthaGraph World Map appears to have solved the problem using geometry(几何学). Created by Japanese designer Hajime Narukawa, it cuts the globe into 96 equal triangles(三角形) and puts them onto a tetrahedron(四面体) shape. In this way, the designer keeps the proportions(比例) of the land and water the same when going from a 3-D sphere to a 2-D map. The map is already being used in Japanese school textbooks. According to the Good Design Award, it was the best example of what the planet really looks like. They did, however, suggest increasing the accuracy further by cutting the world into even smaller pieces. (1) Different from other maps, the AuthaGraph World Map _. A. is more accurate B. is much larger C. includes more places D. is a 3-D one (2) What do we know about the Authagraph World Map? A. North America looks the same size as Africa on this map. B. Alaska looks bigger than Brazil on the map. C. It cuts the globe into 96 equal triangles. D. It cuts the world into smaller circles. 4546 Have you ever felt a strong feeling, but not been able to find the right words to describe it? Maybe there is a word for it, but you just dont know it yet. One man is trying to help fix this problem. University of East London psychology(心理学) researcher Tim Lomas is making a list of words from different languages around the world. The words have no exact equivalent(对等的) words or phrases in the English language. Perhaps the most famous example is “schadenfreude”, the German word describing pleasure at the bad luck of others. Borrowing from as many languages as he could, Lomas searched for “untranslatable” experiences and published them in The Journal of positive psychology last year. His study is called the Positive Lexicography Project. Lomas has focused(集中) mostly on happy moments. He hopes that learning these words will enrich(使丰富) peoples lives. So now, because of the Portuguese(葡萄牙语), when you run your fingers through a loved ones hair you can call it “cafune”. Or you can use the Spanish word “estrenar” to describe the feeling when you wear or use something for the first time. The Germans describe day as “feierabend”, while the Norwegians describe the feeling of sitting around a warm fireplace as “peiskos”. “The limits(极限) of our language are said to define the boundaries of our world,” Lomas wrote for The Conversation. “If we lack(缺乏) of a word for a particular feeling, we are far less likely to experience it.” (1) What does the underlined word “schadenfreude” in the second paragraph mean in Chinese? A. 乐极生悲 B. 幸灾乐祸 C. 苦尽甘来 D. 火上加油 (2) Which of the following is NOT true about Lomas study? A. He borrowed from many languages for his study. B. He studied “untranslatable” experiences. C. His study is called the Positive Lexicography Project. D. His study focused on sad moments in peoples daily life. 4749 People who jog or run for as little as five minutes a day can increase their lives by about three years, a US study says. The researchers study the exercise habits of over 55,000 adults in the United States for 6 to 22 years. About 24% of the adults described themselves as runners. Compared to those who didnt run, they were 30% less likely to die of any cause during the course of the study. The researchers divided the runners up into five groups. The study was based on the time they spent running every week. Those in the lowest group spent about 50 minutes running over a seven-day period. Those in the highest group ran for more than 175 minutes over the course of a week. According to the study, the benefits of running are pretty much the same for all runners. The researchers also measured(测量) running in other ways -by total weekly distance(距离), frequency(频率) and speed. Even the runners in the lowest groups were healthier than the non-runners. “No matter how slow you run or how much time you spend running, if you develop a habit of running, you will become healthier,” the researchers said. To reduce the risk of early death, all it takes is 30 to 59 minutes of running every week. “This finding has public health importance,” the report continued. “For most people, time is one of the main reasons to take part in physical activity. This study may encourage more people to start running. People who are too busy to exercise may love the advantages of a five-minute run.” (1) According to the article, what is the conclusion of the US study? A. Running for five minutes every day can help improve our health. B. Those who run for three hours a week are the healthiest of all people. C. One must run for 30 to 59 minutes a week to avoid early death. D. Time isnt the main cause to take part in physical exercise. (2) The researchers consider running good because_. A. the exercise doesnt require any extra directions B. people can run whenever they like C. even running slowly can be good D. even a five-minute run a day can do us good (3) Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. People who run for ten minutes a day can increase their lives by about three years. B. The study took the researchers about six years to finish. C. The researchers believe more people will start running after reading about their finding. D. About 24% of American adults are runners. 5052 My Student in Need, a non-profit(非盈利的) organization that services schools across the US, runs an online program where teachers request necessities(必需品) and other items for their poor students. Whats more, the students identities(身份) are kept a secret in the process. Since the organization started in 2013, donors(捐赠机构) have filled more than 1,500 requests for students in need. The problem of not being able to afford basic items or school things is common in the US. Almost half of the children in the country are living near the poverty line(贫困线), according to data from the National Center for Children in Poverty. And in the 2013-2014 school year, 1.36 million public school students were homeless, the Department of Education reported, Kim Wombolt, the organizations director, explained that for an area to take part in the program, its head must give a signed letter to the organization. After that, any teacher from that area can put in requests on the website to help their students. In the past, requests were for necessities like winter jacket and boots, or school-related items like a musical instrument(器材) or basic equipment(设 备), “It has to be a need and has to be reasonable,” Wombolt explained, adding that a cellphone, for example, would not be accepted as a request. My Student in Need is looking to become bigger and work with schools across the country. (1) What can we learn about My Student in Need from the text? A. It started in 2012. B. The students identities are kept a secret by it. C. It is an organization that sells student items. D. It has sold more than 1,500 items to students in need. Though you may have difficulty realizing it, there are endless steps you can take to experience new things, gain knowledge, and appreciate(欣赏) what you already have. Learn to forgive others. If you often hate other people around you, then you wont live a wonderful life. So learn to move forward and accept nobody is perfect and that everyone makes mistakes. If someone has really hurt you and feel it difficult to accept that persons apology(道歉), then be honest about it. Dont pretend(假装) that youre okay and then go on complaining. This wont get you very far. Volunteer to help others. It will not only be good for the people around you, but also make you able to connect with different people who can influence your life just as positively as you can influence theirs. You can work in a homeless shelter or help do the cleaning in your neighborhood. Try to be less wasteful. Trying to be not wasteful can help you become thankful and really appreciate the world around you more. You can use paper instead of plastic whenever you can. Dont use too many products that cant be used again. Go to somewhere on foot or by bike instead of driving. All these ideas can make you less wasteful. Get along well with your friends and family. No matter how busy you are, you should develop a habit of spending time with your loved ones and letting them know how much they mean to you. You can write thank-you cards to your friends and family members or call up you parents or grandparents regularly.
