“讲忠诚、严纪律、立政德”三者相互贯通、相互联系。忠诚是共产党人的底色,纪律是不能触碰的底线,政德是必须修炼的素养。永葆底色、不碰底线Unit 5 Launching your career.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。AWhen I first moved to the US,it was very hard for me to understand a friendly chat or conversation. There were a lot of words that were quite unfamiliar to me.They were just common words, but the only difference was the actual meaning and their usage. We are used to different sets of words in other parts of the world due to British English influence.Though this has been changing a lot in recent times,I would like to share with you some of the common words used here and what I felt were different. It took me a while to catch up very basic words that Americans use in daytoday conversations and I am still learning new words every day!Usually in India,we say,“Can I get my stuff in a plastic cover?” Here in the US,people say,“Can I get a bag for the stuff?”We are used to saying I am a nonvegetarian, but in the US,people might get lost. You have to say,“I eat meat or chicken.” When you go to a restaurant,if you are a vegetarian, you should say,“NO Meat or Chicken”; otherwise, you may find interesting stuff as a vegetarian in your food.Americans consider association football (英式足球) to be a kids sport.People say soccer when they refer to actual football. In Europe and other parts of the world we call football, but here in the US they say it soccer.Typically in the restaurant after you are done with a meal, you ask for a check not a bill in the US from the waiter. No one uses “lift” here; it is “elevator”Any shop is called store. We often get confused when Americans use “bike”It means “bicycle”If you want to take a bath, people say,“I need to take a shower.”1Which of the following groups of words is most likely to be said by an American?AWaiter, get my stuff in a plastic cover, please.BIs there anything wrong with the lift?CWould you like to watch the soccer match this afternoon?DIt is so great to go travelling across the country on a bicycle!【解析】细节理解题。根据第四段中的“In Europe and other parts of the world we call football, but here in the US they say it soccer.” C2When you go to a restaurant in the US,which of the following sentences will be used?AIf you dont eat meat, you will say “I am a vegetarian.”BIf you are a nonvegetarian, you will say “I eat meat or chicken.”CIf you are done with a meal, you will say “Could I have the bill, please?”DIf you want interesting stuff as a vegetarian in your food, you will say “No Meat or Chicken.”【解析】细节理解题。 B3It can be inferred from the passage that _.Ajust common words are used in daytoday conversationsBEnglish spoken in India is mostly influenced by British EnglishCBritish English is different from American English in all wordsDEnglish in European countries is mostly influenced by American English【解析】推理判断题。根据第一段的“We are used to different sets of words in other parts of the world due to British English influence.”以及第二段中的“Usually in India,we say.” B4Whats the authors purpose of writing this passage?ATo share some of his funny experiences.BTo tell us that language is always changing.CTo tell us that English spreads widely in the world.DTo introduce some differences between British English and American English.【解析】写作意图题。 DBSometimes people add to what they say even when they dont talk.Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood. In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak,it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the others arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle,so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say,“Pardon me.” or “Excuse me.”Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you dont do so,it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite. For Americans, thumbsup means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbsdown means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are singing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger(食指)Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.Learning a cultures body language is sometimes confusing. If you dont know what to do,the safest thing to do is to smile.5From the first paragraph we can learn that _.Agestures dont mean anything while talkingBgestures can help us to express ourselvesCwe can learn a language well without body languageDonly American people can use gestures【解析】推理判断题。根据一段首句“Sometimes people add to what they say even when they dont talk.” B6If you are introduced to a stranger from the USA,you should _.Agreet him with a hugBplace a hand on his shoulderCshake his hand firmlyDshake his hand weakly【解析】细节理解。根据第二段中的“.people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.” C7In the United States, people often _.Ashow their friendship by touching each otherBshow their friendship by glancing at each otherCsay“Pardon me”to each other when they are talkingDget uncomfortable when you sit close to them【解析】细节理解题。 D8If you talk with an American friend, its polite to _.Alook up and down at your friendBlook at the other person in the eyesChide your opinionDlook at your watch now and then【解析】细节理解题。根据第四段的第一句“Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking.” BCIn the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!Not all past predictions(预言) have been proven wrong.A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the Internetyears before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didnt consider how people would want to use the technology or whether people really needed these hightech (高科技的) things in their lives or not.Lets look at some predictions from the nottoodistant past.Robot helpersWheres the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere,of course. And hes probably not coming anytime soon.Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working environments.Back in the 1950s,however,people said that by now personal robots would be in most peoples homes. So why hasnt it happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy(笨拙的)And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.Telephones of tomorrowIn 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasnt caught_on yet. Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious:people desire for privacy.Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower? Probably notit could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesnt always mean people will want to use it.And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? Its not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination.Keep watching the newsor perhaps the sky outside your windowto see what the future will bring.【语篇解读】本文介绍了几个没有实现的预言及其没有实现的原因。9According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?ATechnology doesnt always mean people want to use it.BPredictions dont need to consider peoples practical use of the technology.CMany of the hightech things people thought wed be using by now simply never appeared.DHightech things are not always convenient to peoples life.【解析】正误判断题。 B10The underlined phrase “caught on” in Paragraph 6 probably means_.Abecome popularBbecome enjoyableCcome into sight Dcome to life【解析】词义猜测题。 A11What does the author think of the flying car?AIt is too difficult to imagine.BIt is too crazy to realise.CIt is likely to appear in the future.DIt has been the focus of the news.【解析】推理判断题。 C12The passage mainly deals with _.Apredictions that catch our imaginationBpredictions that havent come trueCnew technology that can benefit our lifeDnew technology that is in wide use【解析】主旨大意题。 BDCompanies like Google and Z are famous for their “work hard and play hard” attitudes and friendly work environments, but are their employees healthier too?
