Suddenly, it was difficult for me to accept that the roles were now reversed-my mother became my child, and I became her mother. I became impatient, argued with her, once I even yelled at her. Gradually, I was used to this kind of life. Now I am able to deal with her and the situation better. I have learned a lot of life lessons from the experience. My mother reacts very sensitively to my feelings. That is typical of Alzheimers patients. When I visit her, feeling hectic and tense, she reacts immediately, takes on my mood, and becomes nervous and negative. But when I cheerful and attentive, she is happy. This has taught me to pay more attention to my own feelings when I am with other people. I always thought I was very tolerant, but in reality, my tolerance ran out as soon as someone turned away from what I considered “right”. With my mother I can now really be tolerant. Through her illness she has developed a childlike tactlessness. Eating out in restaurants, for example, is a bit embarrassing when she shouts at the waiter that the food is so bad or talks about people at the next table in a loud voice. Of course I make sure that my mother doesnt offend anyone, but Ive stopped complaining about others and have become more tolerant. I have also learned that everything has special value. When my mother got sick I didnt want to burden my two daughters with it. They are young and have enough going on with their education, and starting their careers. I felt that it was simply my job as my mothers daughter. The most wonderful discovery Ive made through my mothers disease may be that my children not only offer to help me when they sense that Im feeling overwhelmed, but that they take care of my mother on their own initiative. They visit her often, play cards with her, and look at photo albums together with her. It shows me that its all worth it.21.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A.How I Cared for My Sick MotherB.What I Have Learned from AlzheimersC.How I Became More TolerantD.Why I Am Feeling Overwhelmed22.Which of the following is common behavior of Alzheimer patients?A.Being sensitive to others moodsB.Being curious about everythingC.Being afraid of strange peopleD.Being particular about clothes23.We can infer that the writers daughters are _.A.considerate B.selfish C.traditional D.naughtyB In between running one of the worlds largest charitable agencies and acting as Microsofts technology advisor, Bill Gates manages to find time to read books, both long and short. Now Gates - who has been labeled a “greedy” reader - has released a list of his favorite books of the year. All of the books are standout reads, according to the billionaire. most of which are focused on business and economy. Here are Bills top four picks for the year (with parts of his full review of each book).Business Adventures, by John Brooks Brooks collection was published in 1969 and remains one of Gates favorites. He re-read it again this year, labeling it the “best business book Ive ever read”. “Shortly after we met, Warren Buffett lent me this collection of New Yorker business articles front the 1950s and 1960s. I loved them as much as he did. Brooksinsights (洞察力)about business have aged beautifully, and they are as true today as ever.”Capital in lire Twenty-First Century, by Thomas Piketty Pikettys novel hit the shelves in August 2013 and sparked much discussion concerning income inequality throughout this year. Gates also got to sit down with Piketty himself after reading the non-fiction work to discuss the topic. “As I told him, although I have concerns about some of his secondary points and policy prescriptions. I agree with his most important conclusions: inequality is a growing problem and that governments should play a role in reducing it.”How Asia works, by Joe Studwell Studwells work which was published in May this year addresses how countries such as Japan, South Korea and China have continued to achieve high growth and why other countries have failed to do the same. “The agriculture section of the book was particularly insightful. It provided ample food for thought for me as well as the whole Agriculture team at our foundation. And it left us thinking about whether parts of the Asian model can apply in Africa.”Making the Modern World: Materials and Demateriallation, by Vaclav Smil Smils books are a constant favorite of the Microsoft founder- one of his books makes Gates list almost every year. “Making the Modem World”came out late last year and explores the global use of materials, from silicon to wood, and plastic. “If anyone trios to tell you Were using fewer materials, send him this book. With his usual skepticism and his love of data. Smil shows how our ability to make things with less material-saysoda cans that need less aluminum-makes them cheaper. which actually encourages more production.”24.The books mentioned in the text are all about _.A.charity in the world B.business and economy C.poverty in the world D.Bill Gates life experience25.Of the books, _ is best praised by Bill Gates.A.How Asia Works B.Capital in the Twenty-First CenturyC.Business Adventures D.Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization26.Gates once had a personal discussion with the author of _.A.Capital in the Twenty-First Century B.Business AdventuresC.How Asia Works D.Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization27.In How Asia Works, the author analyses _.A.why African agriculture cannot be developed fastB.how they can apply Asian economic model in African countriesC.why Asia is so slow in agricultural developmentD.how some Asian countries have rapidly grown in economyCBig Ben, the Queen, a plate of ham and eggs no, no, no. If youre looking for a symbol of Britain, only one thing passes the test the umbrella. Now, I know what youre thinking we have rain in China and we have umbrellas too. Certainly, I will never forget the way it rained when I lived in Beijing: the streets became instant (立即的) rivers and the sky flashed with lightning for hours on end. People rushed for cover under bin bags, the shops were emptied of their plastic ponchos (斗篷) within seconds, and I found myself soaked (浸透) from head to foot, my poorly-chosen skirt and T-shirt now totally see-through.This would never have happened in Britain. For one thing, during my year in Beijing, it only really rained about 10 times. But although we never get a Beijing-style washout in London, the drizzle (毛毛雨) that does fall is all but constant. Even when the sky is perfectly blue, you can be sure its going to cloud over and start drizzling again within the hour. And when it does, there is chaos. Trains stop, drains (下水道) block, and buses break down as if this was the first time the local authorities had seen this wet stuff coming out of the clouds. So, as with so many things in the UK, its up to ordinary people to sort themselves out. No self-respecting Briton will ever leave home without his “brolly” as the umbrella is affectionately (亲切地) known.A brolly has hundreds of uses, even on rare rain-free days. A real gentleman of London will use his umbrella as a walking stick. A traditional game of cricket (板球) can be played using an umbrella as a bat (球棒). Nor do you ever have to be afraid of robbers your umbrella doubles as a defensive weapon (武器).There is no brolly more British than my own. But its not from London or Manchester or anywhere in the UK. It was a gift from my Chinese teacher in Beijing. How fitting that my No 1 symbol of Britishness like almost everything in Britain was made in China.28. The author mentioned her rainy weather experience in Beijing to show that _.A. many foreigners have embarrassing moments living in BeijingB. the rain in Beijing is usually much heavier than the rain in LondonC. unlike Beijingers, it is necessary for British people to get prepared for whenever-possible rainD. both Beijingers and Londoners have unpleasant experiences with sudden rain29. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refers to “_”.A. people getting extremely wet on rainy daysB. sudden rain leading to traffic troublesC. people being well-prepared on rainy daysD. it only raining a dozen times per year30. The underlined word “chaos” in Paragraph 4 probably means _.A. doubt B. excitement C. joy D. disorder31. What is the main idea of the article?A. Beijing-style rain and London-style drizzles both bring chaos.B. Everything in Britain was made in China.C. Why the umbrella is the best symbol of Britain.D. What British people use a brolly for.DWhen US teenager Jake Olson isnt playing football or golf for his high school, hes often offering inspiration through his new book about his own life. These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his fathers guidance. It seems obvious that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature have also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision (视力) from his left eye when he was an infant (婴儿) and eventually his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old.Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation (动力).“If I was going to sit on the couch (沙发) all day feeling sorry for myself, I wasnt going to do anything. I decided right then and there that I wasnt going to let it stop me and that I was going to go out and persevere (坚持不懈),” he said.It was with that mind-set that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life.“Its about opening the readers eyes to their true potential in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.Jakes father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through adversity (困境).“Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback, theres a setup,” Jake said. “In every one of us, theres more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice.”32. We can learn from the article that Jake Olson _.A. was born a blind childB. was born with a gift for golfC. has great muscle memoryD. is trying to find the cure for his disease33. According to the article, Jakes family members _.A. pity him deeplyB. once gave up hope on himC. encouraged him to write the bookD. admire his efforts and determination34. Trust is a risk. But you cant be successful when theres a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.Unfortunately, weve all been victims of betrayal. Whether weve been stolen from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply cant trust anymore. 37 Its understandable, but if youre willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.38 Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.39 If youve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But theres a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, well have our trust tested or violated. You didnt lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40 Instead, its a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.A. Learn to really trust yourself.B. It is putting confidence in someone.C. Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D. Remember that you can expect the best in return.E. Theyve been too badly hurt and they cant bear to let it happen again.F. This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.G.
