I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thought. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these device and truly communication with others. On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a ruleno laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students suppose that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. Theres a bit of truth to that. Some students suppose that I am anti-technology. Theres no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversions and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to think differently and make connections between the course materials and the class discussion. Ive been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the educations show student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom. Im not saying that I wont ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, Im sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.24. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with _.A. the course material B. others misuse of technologyC. discussion topics D. the authors class regulations25. The underlined word “engage” in para.4 probably means _.A. explore B. accept C. change D. reject26. According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may _.A. keep students from doing independent thinkingB. encourage students to have in-depth conversationsC. help students to better understand complex themesD. affect students concentration on course evaluation27. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author _.A. is quite stubborn B. will give up teaching historyC. will change his teaching plan soon D. values technology-free dialogues in his classCHowling is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf pack(群). As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There are different explanations of a wolfs howl and it appears that there may be more to discover. One theory is that wolves howl to bond(结合)better together. Its almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together, perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of gathering with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior. Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus, and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm status(地位) among its members? Why do wolves howl for sure? What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering. Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occur in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call” where wolves all howl together to report their presence. 28. What is the possible similarity between wolves howling together and humans singing in chorus?A. The act of calling each other. B. The sense of achievement.C. The act of hunting for something.D. The sense of belonging to a group.29. Why does Harrington think the “social bond” theory may be wrong?A. Wolves separate from each other after howling.B. Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.C. Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together.D. Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.30. Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to _.A. show their ranks B. find their matesC. report the missing ones D. express their loneliness31. “Howling . is a contagious behaviour” (in the last paragraph) means _.A howling is a signal for hunting. B. howling is a way of communicationC. howling often occurs in the morning D. howling spreads from one to anotherDA simple piece of clothesline hangs between some environmentally friendly Americans and their neighbors. On one side stand those who see clothes dryers as a waste of energy and a major polluter of the environment. As a result, they are turning to clotheslines as part of the “what-I-can-do environmentalism.” On the other side are people who are against drying clothes outside, arguing that clotheslines are unpleasant to look at. They have persuaded Homeowners Associations (HOAs) access the U.S. to ban outdoor clotheslines, because clothesline drying also tends to lower home value in the neighborhood. This has led to a Right-to-Dry Movement that is calling for laws to be passed to protect peoples right to use clotheslines. So far, only three states have laws to protect clothesline. Right-to-Dry supporters argue that there should be more. Matt Reck, 37, is the kind of eco-conscious (有生态意识的) person who feeds his trees with bathwater and reuses water drops from his air conditioners to water plants. His family also uses a clothesline. But on July 9, 2007, the HOA in Wake Forest, North Carolina, told him that a dissatisfied neighbor had telephoned them about his clothesline. The Recks paid no attention to the warning and still dried their clothes on a line in the yard. “Many people say they are environmentally friendly but they dont take matters into their own hands,” says Reck. The local HOA has decided not to take any action, unless more neighbors come to them. North Carolina lawmakers are saying that banning clotheslines is not the right thing to do. But HOAs and housing businesses believe that clothesline drying reminds people of poor neighborhoods. They worry that if buyers think their future neighbors cant even afford dryers, housing prices will fall. Environmentalists say such worries are not necessary, and in view of global warming, that idea needs to change. As they say, “The clothesline is beautiful. Hanging clothes outside should be encouraged. We all have to do at least something to slow down the process of global warming.”32. One of the reasons why supporters of clothes dryers are trying to ban clothesline drying is that _. A. clothes dryers are more efficient B. clothesline drying reduces home value C. clothes dryers are energy-saving D. clothesline drying is not allowed in most U.S. states33. Which of the following best describes Matt Reck? A. He is a kind-hearted man. B. He is an impolite man. C. He is an experienced gardener. D. He is a man of social responsibility.34. Who support the use of clothesline drying? A. Housing businesses. B. Environmentalists. C. Homeowners Associations. D. Recks dissatisfied neighbors.35. What is mainly discussed in the text? A. Clothesline drying: a way to save energy and money. B. Clothesline drying: a lost art rediscovered. C. Opposite opinions on clothesline drying. D. Different varieties of clotheslines.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。THINK ADDING VALUE (and youll get more money)Most people either like their job, dislike their job or love their job. Everyone wants to make more money regardless of how they feel about their job. The secret to making more money is, focus on adding value. Think less of what you can have or get. 36 You dont always have to do more though we always can do more. What you might consider is doing different. Let me explain.1. Do you choose to be happy at work? Its a choice. And you can do it. Its a lot of mind over matter. Mind whats important and the rest doesnt matter. 37 When you choose to be happy, you will affect others in the workplace.2. 38 Michaels definition of a drag is, a person who greatly reduces all good. Of course, they have a bad attitude. If youre this kind of person, you can change. Start being positive. Start by giving not noticeable but honest praise to co-workers. If youve been a drag, just start looking for true reasons to give others some praise. It will set you apart from everyone else. People will consider you as being more caring and more interested in them. Your influence will skyrocket especially if youre in an environment where there is little praise and encouragement.3. CHOOSE what you are going to think. Most people have given up controlling of their brains to CNN, ABC, NBC, the way things are, society, drama, negativity and the like. Its time to take back charge of your brain. Get your focus directed. Like Paul said in the bible, “Think on these things. Things that are true, are of a good report, are honorable, are positive.” 39 If you have nothing to read that is positive, send me your email address and Ill send you a free copy of my Powerful Attitudes e-book. Read a little every morning. It will positively and powerfully affect the rest of your day. When you change you, you will add value in your workplace. Like the late great business philosopher, Jim Rohn said, “You can take out the garbage at McDonalds and earn minimum wage. But if you take out the garbage and whistle as you do it every day, youre likely to earn 50 cents more per hour.”Add value to your workplace by controlling your own attitude. 40 A. Start your day by reading something positive.B. Think more of what you can do, produce or create. C. Just be yourself and create a strong self image.D. Are you a drag?E. Your attitude and your happiness is important.F. Fall in love with it.G. You will advance faster and in time, make a lot more money.第三部分:英语知识运用(共三节,满分55分)第一节:完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的四个选项(A B C D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。I fell in love with Yosemite National Park the first time I saw it, when I was 13.
