7、省略为“at+基数词”或“at age+基数词”。at(the age of)/at age可位于句首或句末,在功能上相当于when引导的时间状语从句。,2.When she was nineteen months old,Helen fell ill. fall ill意为“生病”,fall用作系动词,意为“进入(某种状态)”,其后常接形容词作表语。 【注意】fall ill是短暂性动作,不能和表示一段时间的状语连用,若与表示一段时间的状语连用,应改为表示持续状态的be ill或be sick。,3.After she lost her ability to see and hear,she
8、 became difficult and wild. ability在本句中为不可数名词,意为“能力”。have the ability to do sth.意为“有做某事的能力”;lose the ability to do sth.意为“失去做某事的能力”。 【拓展】ability表示“才能,才干”时,多用复数形式。 4.In 1887,a young teacher named Anne Sullivan,began to help Helen. a young teacher named Anne Sullivan意为“一位叫安妮沙利文的年轻教师”。named在此为动词name(命名
9、,取名)的过去分词,过去分词短语named Anne Sullivan作后置定语,修饰名词teacher。,5.At first,the words didnt mean anything to Helen. at first 为固定短语,意为“起初,起先”,常用于句首或句末,表示初始时间,用来与后来发生的事情形成对比,与in the end相对。 6.Then,one day,while Helen was playing in some water,Anne spelled W-A-T-E-R on Helens hand. while为连词,意为“当的时候”,引导时间状语从句。while
10、引导的句子表示的是状态或延续性的动作,常用进行时态。,【辨析】while,when,as 三者都可表示“当的时候”,引导时间状语从句,它们之间有共同点,也有不同之处。 (1)while引导的从句中的谓语动词常用延续性动词,表示从句的动作正在进行时,主句的动作发生了。 (2)when和as引导的时间状语从句中的谓语动词可以是延续性动词,也可以是非延续性动词。 (3)as引导时间状语从句时,常强调主从句谓语动词表示的动作的同时性,含有“一边一边”的意思。,7.Anne was filled with pride. be filled with意为“充满,装有”,是fillwith的被动形式。fil
11、lwith意为“用装满”。fill是动词,其形容词为full,反义词为empty。 【拓展】be full of意为“满是的”,表示状态。 8.As Helen grew older,she made a lot of progress and learned to read. 本句是由as引导的时间状语从句。 make progress为固定短语,意为“取得进步”,其中progress为不可数名词。,9.She did her best to help others in the community who were deaf or blind. 本句含有由who引导的定语从句,先行词是ot
12、hers,who were deaf or blind作others的后置定语。 【辨析】other,another,the other,others,the others (1)other意为“另外的”。只作定语,常与复数名词连用;但如果前面有the,this,that,some,any,each,every,no,one, my,your,his等时,则可与单数名词连用。 (2)another意为“另一个”。指三者或三者以上中的另一个,用作限定词或代词。 (3)the other意为“两者中另一个”。常与one连用,构成“one,the other”;作定语修饰复数名词时,表示“其余的全部
13、”。,(4)others是other的复数形式,泛指别的人或物(但不是全部),不能作定语,构成someothers。 (5)the others是the other的复数形式。特指其余所有的人或物。 10.She will be greatly missed. 本句是一般将来时的被动语态,其构成为“will be+动词的过去分词”。 greatly为副词,意为“很,非常”,常用于动词或分词前。,Work in groups.
