Thisyearwillbeatest.Whiletheglobaleconomyhasavoidedworst-casefearsofwidespreadrecession,inflationremainshighandseveralmajoreconomies,includingtheUnitedStatesandChina,willneedtoberesilientiftheyaretooutpaceweakgrowthexpec-tations.TheInternationalMonetaryFund(IMF)predictsglobalGDPgrowthwillincrease3.1%in2024.1

Togeneratemomentumforfuturegrowth,publicandpri-vateorganizationsaroundtheworldaremovingaheadwithurgentprojectsinsectorsrangingfromconstructiontoenergy.InthePMIEconomicSnapshotsurveyinQ42023,251%ofrespondentsreportthattheirorganizationsexperiencednoprojectdelays/cancellationsinthepastsixmonthsand29%expecttoresumedelayed/canceledprojectsinthenextsixmonths.Ontopofthoseindicators,67%ofcompaniesareengagedindigitaltrans-formationefforts,withanother12%planningsucheffortsinthenext12months,accordingtoseniorleadersinthe2023PMIAnnualGlobalSurveyonProjectManagement.3

Seeingtheseprojectsthroughsuccessfullyrequiresawiderangeofskills,asorganizationsfacemorecomplexandvola-tileforcesthaneverbefore.Thisisdrivingtheneedforamorestrategicapproachtoriskmanagement,4designedtohelpthem

anticipateinternalandexternalpressures,andthenabsorb,recoverfromandtrans-forminresponse.

The2023PMIAnnualGlobalSurveyonProjectManagementalsorevealedthatchangesinworkarrangementsaredriv-ingnewwaysofworkingacrossorganiza-tions.Thetoptwofactorsspurringchange,accordingtorespondents,wereremoteorhybridofficesanddistributedteams(61%),aswellasnewtechnologiesavailabletoperformexistingwork(45%).Further,hybridprojectmanagementisgaininggroundasthefit-for-purposeapproach,increasing57%overthelastthreeyears.LearnmoreaboutthesetrendstowardhybridinthePulseoftheProfession®2024report.5

Atthesametime,rapidtechnologicaldevelopments,notablygenerativeartificialintelligence(GenAI),areredefininghowcom-paniesdeliverprojects.6Accordingtothelat-estPMIannualglobalsurvey,21%ofprojectprofessionalssaytheyalwaysoroftenuseartificialintelligence(AI)tomanageprojects,while82%ofseniorleaderssayitwillimpacthowprojectsarerunattheircompanyoverthenextfiveyears.

tunities.InQ42023,24%ofrespon-dentssaidtheirorganizationsincreasedfull-timeprojectmanagementstaffinginthepastsixmonths,and36%expectfull-timeprojectmanagementstaffingtoincreaseinthenextsixmonths,accordingtoPMI’sEconomicSnapshotsurvey.9

AsiaPacificcanexpectuneveneconomicgrowth,withtheIMFprojectingslowerGDPrategainsintwooftheregion’slargesteconomies.Japan’sgrowthprojectionfor2024is0.9%,downfrom1.9%in2023,whileAustraliaisgrapplingwithanuptickinunemploymentandaprojectedgrowthof1.4%.Yettheregionalsoboastssomeemerginghotspots.CountriesinSoutheastAsia’smanufacturinghub,includingSouthKorea,VietnamandIndonesia,shouldanticipatehealthygrowthastheirgov-ernmentscontinuetorolloutincentivestopryproductionbusinessawayfromChina.Regardlessoflocation,companiesacrossAsiaPacificwillbeforcedtoleanintoinnovationtofireupprojectactivity.

Nearlyone-thirdofworkersinAustralia,forexample,useAIintheirjobs,accordingtoa2023reportbyRandstad.2And43%saythey’reexcitedbytheprospectofAIintheworkforce.ProjectmanagerscanexpandjobandcareeropportunitiesbyfollowingAItrendsanddevel-opingadjacentskills,3suchastheabilitytobuildandtrackdata-sharingplatforms,Sivandisays.“ByembracingdigitaltransformationandharnessingthepotentialofAI,projectprofes-sionalscanpositionthemselvestoexcel.”

CASHINGINONFINTECH

AsiaPacific’sstatusasafintechinnova-torisonlygrowing.Theregionisthegloballeaderincashlesstransactiongrowth,with109%gainsprojecteduntil2025,thena76%increasepredictedthrough2030,accordingtoPwC.4Thattranslatesintoprojectoppor-tunitiesacrossAsiaPacific,particularlyinSingapore,wherethegovernmenthaslaunchedtheultimatetesttoscaleacentralbankdigitalcurrency(CBDC).

TheMonetaryAuthorityofSingapore(MAS)unveiledplansinNovembertopilotthreeformsofdigitalcurrency:tokenizedbankliabilities,regulatedstablecoinsandwholesaleCBDCs.Thelattercouldbethebiggestgame-changerinthatthewhole-saleCBDCswouldbeusedtosettledomes-ticpaymentsbetweencommercialbanks,withaneyeonusingthesametechnologyinthefuturetosettlecross-bordersecurities.Withsuchinitiativesdrivinghugedemand

CompaniesacrossAsiaPacificwillalsoneedprojectprofessionalswhocanhelpthemdeliveronsustainabilitygoals.Halfofcom-paniesintheregionplantocaptureandreporttheirenterprise-widecarbonfootprintbyusingquantifiablemetrics—upfrom30%in2023,accordingtoInternationalDataCorp.6

Thatopensupopportunitiesforprojectman-agersskilledattrackingtheimpactofenviron-mental,socialandgovernance(ESG)initiativesandelevatingadata-drivenmindsetonteams. “Companiesareincreasinglyformulatinginnovativestrategiesandinitiativesaimedatmitigatingtheimpactsofclimatechange,”saysSivandi.“Thesepioneeringendeavorsoftennecessitatethedevelopmentofcom-prehensiveroadmaps,strategicframeworksandmeticulousplanning.”

PROJECTTALENTNEEDSTRENDUPWARD

ForJapan,constructionandtourismarepotentialbrightspotsasteamsrampupprojectworkforExpo2025inOsaka.NearlyUS$1.6billioninsiteconstructionspend,anexpected28.2millionvisitorsandUS$14billionineconomicactivityshouldaddfueltothenation’srecenttourismrebound.Andwithsupplychainissues(finally)stabilizing,Japan’sautomanufacturingindustryshouldcontinueitsresurgence.

Butthecountrystillhasaseriousprojecttalentcrunch,saysRajeevSupekar,PMP,regionaldirector,SouthAsia,projectman-agement,engineeringandglobalsalesatCCLTokyo,Japan.

Toturnthetide,Japan’sgovernmenthaspledgedtospendUS$7.5billionoverthenextfiveyearsforreskillingprogramsthatincludetrainingandjobcoaches.Pri-vatecompaniesarealsosteppingup.Forinstance,mediafirmCyberagentdevelopedaprogramtoupskillworkerstohelpcloseitsITtalentgap.

ThetalentshortageisparticularlyglaringintheITsector,saysMattiasHallberg,PMP,CTO,directorofR&DatEQIQinTokyo.Toretaintoptalent,companyleadersshouldlearnhowtoprovideautonomyandcultivateahealthyworkenvironment.Suchactionswillhelpensure“theconditionsforintrinsicmoti-vationtoflourisharethere,”hesays.

InAustralia,theneedforprojectmanagerswillincreasein2024,Sivandisays.Thecountryisattractinganaverageofjustfourapplicantsperjobopening,accordingtoLinkedIn.
