AscientistwhowasontheNobelPrizeCommitteecalledHansForssbergexplainedthat“thediscoveryofartemisininhasledtothedevelopmentofnewdrugswhichhavesavedthelivesofmillions”.WhenthankingtheCommitteeforthehonour,TuYouyousaid,“Thisisnotonlyanhonourformyself,butalsorecognitionandencouragementforallscientistsinChina.”

TuYouyouwasborninZhejiangProvince,China,on30December,1930.ShestudiedmedicineatPekingUniversityHealthScienceCentre.Aftergraduation,shebecameamemberofChinaAcademyofChineseMedicalSciences.Later,shestudiedChinesemedicinefortwoandahalfyearswithexpertsinthefieldfromwhom
shegainedadeepknowledgeabouttraditionalpractices.Para.3.
In1969,TuYouyouwaschosentoestablishateamtofindacureformalaria—adiseasethatkilledmillionsofpeopleeveryyear.Acrosstheworld,scientistshadbeentryingtofindacure.Theytestedmorethan240,000chemicalswithnosuccess.However,TuYouyouhadanideathatChineseherbsmightholdthesecret.ShestudiedancientChinesemedicalliteratureandvisitedexpertsintraditionalChinesemedicine.Sheresearchedhundredsoftraditionalrecipesconnectedtoanti-malarialcures.ThenTuYouyouandherteambeganusingmodernresearchmethodstostudytheseChineseherbsonebyone.Para.4.Thiswasnotaneasytask.Thereasonwhythiswasdifficultwasthattheteamhadlimitedresources.Theydidnothaveenoughstaff,andthelaboratoryinwhich
theyworkedhadpoorairquality.However,afterhundredsoffailedexperiments,theyeventuallycameacrossapromisingchemical.Itworkedwellinexperimentsonanimals,buttheyhadtoknowifitwassafeforhumans.TuYouyoubravelyvolunteeredtobethefirsthumansubjectwhentheywerereadytostarttestingandtherestofherteamfollowedher.Thetestwasasuccess.Themedicinetheydiscovered,artemisinin,hasnowbecometheworld’smosteffectivedrugforfightingmalaria.Para.5.
EventhoughTuYouyouisnotinterestedinfame,shehasbecomeascientistwhoseworkisinternationallyrenowned.In2019,shewasselectedbytheBBCasoneofthemostinfluentialfiguresofscienceinthe20thCenturyalongwithAlbertEinsteinandAlanMathisonTuring.TuYouyouwasnotedforherbraveryinbeingascientistduringadifficulttimeforscienceinChina,herabilitytouseoldwisdomandnewmethodstoachievehergoalsandthefactthat
