SinceChinesecourseswereaddedtothecurriculaof132Frenchjuniorandseniorhighschoolstheirenrollmenthasdoubled.ThatattheOrientalLanguageandCultureCollege,oneofFrance’slargestChineseteachingcolleges,hasskyrocketedinrecentyears,accordingtoXuDan,deanoftheChineseDepartment.SheconfirmsthatChineseandJapanesearenowthetwomoststudiedAsianlanguages.
FrenchjuniorstudentBeidaistotallyfluentinChinese.“I’mlearningChinesebecauseIwanttobeaninternationallawyerinChina,”heexplains.
YoungFrenchentrepreneurPatricPeniaestablishedhisBeiyanConsultancyCompanyinParis,anditnowworkstogetherwithChinaCentralTelevisioninintroducingFrenchtraditionsandculturetoChineseaudiences.PatricalsocooperatedwithBeijing’sUniversityofFinanceandEconomicsandCentralUniversityofFinanceandEconomicsinlaunchingathree-weekcrashcourseinChineseinBeijing.In2005,heinitiatedthe“Chinesepeopleandbusinessmanagement”trainingcourseinParis,whichconsistsofseminarstohelpFrenchbusinessmenunderstandhowChinesebusinessoperates.
GermanyhasalsocaughtontothebenefitsofChineselanguagelearning,andhasaddedChinesetoitshighschoolgraduationexams.ManyinternationalcorporationsalsoholdintroductoryChinesecoursesforemployee’sassignedworkinChina.“Englishisn’tenough,”saysHerrGerck,presidentofSiemensChina,“WeneedtoequipourstaffwiththeabilitytodealwithChinesemerchantsintheirownlanguage.”
InBritain,aChineseteachingprogramthatwillformpartofthenationalcurriculumhasbeenformulatedandapprovedbytheDepartmentofEducationandSkills.IntheU.S.,ChineseispartoftheAdvancePlacementProgramforAmericanhighschoolstudents.Thismeansthatstudentscantakecollege-levelChineseinthesamewayastheylearnFrench,SpanishandGermanandgaincreditsiftheygetgoodtestresults.Morethan2,500primaryandhighschoolsnowofferAPcoursesintheChineselanguage.
CulturalEchoes
Chinesecharacters,alongwiththeConfucianphilosophy,havealwayshadprofoundinfluenceonHanculturalcirclesinAsia,andafterabriefhiatus,ChineselanguageteachingisindemandoncemoreintheROK,Singapore,JapanandVietnam.
“SingaporeansrushedtolearnEnglishinthe1970s,whenitwasbelievedtobethemostusefullanguageforthefuture.Now,inthe21stcentury,alackofChinese-speakingskillsisseenasadisadvantage,”saysoneSingaporeanstudent,whorecentlygraduatedfromBeijingUniversitywithaBAininternationalrelations.
TheGermanambassadortotheROKoncetoldviceministerofEducationZhangXinsheng:“Nowadays,highschoolteachersofGermanandFrenchmustalsolearnChineseiftheywanttokeeptheirjobs.”
IntheROK,ahighHSK(HanyuShuipingKaoshi—theChineseLanguageProficiencyTesttakenbynonnativespeakers)actsasaspringboardforjobsandpromotionsinlargecorporations.ThenumberofcollegesofferingChineselanguagecoursesintheROKatpresentstandsat347,comparedto20inthe1980s.Bytheyear2007,Chinesecourseswillbetaughtinprimaryandhighschools,accordingtotheROKministerofEducation.InthecourseofChina’seconomicboomoverthepasttwodecades,alargenumberofKoreanshaveimmigratedtoChina.Manynowhavetheirownbusinesses,whichwouldhavebeenimpossiblewithoutaformalgroundinginChinese.
InThailand,ChinesehaseclipsedJapanesetobecomethesecondmostcommonsecondlanguage.“PublicinteresthasmovedfromJapanesetoChinese,”theJapaneseSankeiShimbunrecentlyreported,“thenumberofpeoplelearningChineseinThailandnowistenfoldthatoftenyearsago.”
IndonesianPresidentSuharto’sresignationin1998providedtheopportunityforacloserrelationshipbetweenthetwonationsandfortheIndonesianChinesepopulationtolearnChineselanguageaswellasChinesetraditions.Inthebeliefthat“ChinesechildrenshouldlearnChinese”IndonesianChineseresidentssenttheirchildrentoschoolsofferingChinesecoursessothattheymightunderstandChineseculturaltraditionsaswellasspeakthelanguage.Enrollmentatsuchschoolssoonskyrocketed,andparentsoftenqueuedupallnightinordertobesecureadmissionfortheirchildren.
WhyChinese?
“PeoplearoundtheworldarerushingtolearnChinese.ThisinterestcanbeattributedtoChina’seconomicopportunitiesanditstellingeffectonthefuture”sostatedthearticleChina—EmbracingtheWorldpublishedintheMayissueofTheHindu.
InviewoftheinternationaldemandforChineselanguagelearning,theChinesegovernmentplanstosetup100ConfuciusInstitutesaroundtheworld.TheConfuciusInstituteisanonprofitorganizationwhoseaimistopromotetheChineselanguageandcultureoverseasthroughInternetoron-campusnon-degreecourses.ThefirstinstitutewasestablishedinSeoul,ROKinNovember2004.Sincethenbrancheshavebeensetupinmanyothercountries,includingtheU.S.,Sweden,FranceandUzbekistan.
GreathopeshavebeenlaidonChengo(ChineseandEnglishontheGo),anE-languagelearningsystembasedonpinyinratherthanChinesecharactersdevelopedby12expertsfromChinaandtheU.S.,asameanstohelpchildrenlearnChinese.Thissoftwarecaptureschildren’sattentionwithstories,gamesandanimationsbasedonthe2008Olympics.
Inordertoensurethattherearesufficientteacherstomeetthecurrentdemand,theChinesegovernmenthassetuptrainingcenterswhereoverseasteachersofChinesecanattendlectures.Ithasalsolaunchedoverseastrainingcourses.
InadditiontodispatchingChineseteachersabroadtoteachChinese,thegovernmenthasalsosentover1,000professionallyqualifiedvolunteerstocountriesinAsia,Europe,AmericaandAfrica.
SinceChinesebecamesopopularintheinternationalcommunity,thenumberofforeignstudentsapplyingtotaketheChineseLanguageProficiencyTest(HSK)hassurgedfrom21,000in1996to100,000in2004.ItisnowpossibletotaketheHSKexam,knowntocandidatesasthe“ChineseTOEFL”,at151localuniversitiesorcollegesin34countries.
TheParis-basedChinesenewspaperEuropeanTimes,whichhasthehighestcirculationamongChinese-languagenewspapersinEurope,releasedacommentearlythisyearentitled“DevelopasRapidlyastheChineseEconomyBooms”thatanalyzedwhysomanypeoplearerushingtolearnChineseandstudyinChina.ItsconclusionswerethatChina’sincreasingeconomiccompetitivenessandthebrilliantfuturecareeritoffersisapowerfulluretomasteringChinese.ButitalsopointedoutthatlearningChineseisthekeytoChineseculturaltraditions.Afterall,whatpointisthereinlearningaforeignlanguageifyoucan’tuseittoexpressknowledgeoftheculturefromwhichitsprang!1.ThisarticlemainlydiscussesaboutthepopularityofChineseinwesterncountries.
