BritishColumbiaisthethirdlargestCanadianprovinces,both

inareaandpopulation.Itisnearly1.5timesaslargeasTexas,

andextends800miles(1,280km)northfromtheUnitedStatesborder.

ItincludesCanadasentirewestcoastandtheislandsjustoffthe

coast.

MostofBritishColumbiaismountainous,withlongruggedranges

runningnorthandsouth.Eventhecoastalislandsaretheremains

lastIceAge,thisrangewasscouredbyglaciersuntilmostofit

Seawindsthatblowinlandfromthewestarewarmedbyacurrent

wintertemperaturesaverageabovefreezingandsummersaremild.

Thesewarmwesternwindsalsocarrymoisturefromtheocean.

Inlandfromthecoast,thewindsfromthePacificmeetthemountain

barriersofthecoastalrangesandtheRockyMountains.Astheyrise

tocrossthemountains,thewindsarecooled,andtheirmoisture

beginstofallasrain.Onsomeofthewesternslopesalmost200

inches(500cm)ofrainfalleachyear.

MorethanhalfofBritishColumbiaisheavilyforested.On

mountainslopesthatreceiveplentifulrainfall,hugeDouglasfirs

riseintoweringcolumns.Theseforestgiantsoftengrowtobeas

muchas300feet(90m)tall,withdiametersupto10feet(3m).More

lumberisproducedfromthesetreesthanfromanyotherkindoftree

inNorthAmerica.Hemlock,redcedar,andbalsamfirareamongthe

othertreesfoundinBritishColumbia.

soonbecomepopulararoundtheworld.Asapossiblefarmed

supplementaryfoodsource,however,planktonisgaining

considerableinterestamongmarinescientists.

Onetypeofplanktonthatseemstohavegreatharvest

possibilitiesisatinyshrimp-likecreaturecalledkrill.Growing

totwoorthreeincheslong,krillprovidesthemajorfoodforthe

greatbluewhale,thelargestanimaltoeverinhabittheEarth.

Realizingthatthiswhalemaygrowto100feetandweigh150tons

atmaturity,itisnotsurprisingthateachonedevoursmorethan

onetonofkrilldaily.

recognizearose,anapple,oranorchid.
