studies,tamarinmonkeyswereobservedrubbingtheirbodiesonthetrunkofatree.Atfirst,researchersthought
thattheyweremarkingtheirterritory,acommonbehaviourinthisspecies.Botanicalexpertslaterconfirmedthat
thetreewasaspeciesofcabreuva,whichiswellknownforitsmedicalproperties.
Researchersdecidedtoplacecamera-trapsindifferentsitesatthefootofthetreetorecordfuturevisitsby
tamarinmonkeys.Therecordssurprisinglyshowedthatmanyanimalslivingintheforestvisitedit.Totally,ten
specieswereobserved.Formanyofthem,itwasthefirsttimethatbehaviorssimilartoself-medicationhadbeen
observed.Moresurprisingly,onespeciesspreadresinoneachothefsfurinpairs.Ingeneral,thespeciesseemedto
specificallyvisitthetreetoacquiretheresinandseeminglybenefitfromit,eitherhealingtheirwoundsorfighting
backparasites(寄生虫).
Whilefurtherstudiesareneededtoidentifythepropertiesoftheresinandthusconfirmingthatthisisindeed
self-medication,theuseofitsuggeststhatcabreuvarepresentsacommonanduniversaldrugstorefortheresidents
