theextentofthedevastation.Ashcoveredthemarblediamond-patternedfloorandfloatedinlarge

poolsofgreywaterfromthefirehoses.Behindaheapofblackenedoakbeamsthatlaypiledup

wheretheyhadfallen,daylightfromvastholesinthecathedralrooflitagoldencrossoverastatue

byNicolasCoustou,whichappearedtohaveescapeddamage.Preliminaryinspectionsalso

damagefromtheheat,whichfirefighterssaidreachedmorethan800℃,expertsalsoneedto

ProfessorD.B.Dowdarguesthatwehavemisfiledthesignificanceofdrawingbecauseweseeitas

aprofessionalskillinsteadofapersonalcapacity.Wemistakenlythinkof"good"drawingsasthose

whichworkasrecreationsoftherealworld,asrealisticillusions.Rather,drawingshouldbe

recategorizedasasymbolictool.

Humanbeingshavebeendrawingfor73,000years.It'spartofwhatitmeanstobehuman.We

don'thavethestrengthofchimpanzees(大猩猩)becausewe'vegivenupanimalstrengthto

manipulatesubtleinstruments,likehammers,spears,and—later—pensandpencils.Thehuman

handisanextremelydensenetworkofnerveendings.Inmanyways,humanbeingsarebuiltto

draw.

Someresearchersarguethatdoodling(涂画)activatesthebrain'sso-calleddefault
