sustainabilityforthereport,andisdisappointedthateatinglessmeatandbuyinglocalfoodaren'tin
thefinalproduct."Especiallyifyouconsiderthateatinglessmeat,especiallyredandprocessed,
hashealthbenefits;*shesays.
Sowhathappened?Theofficialresponseisthatsustainabilityfallstoofaroutsidethe
guidelines,officialscope,whichistoprovide"nutritionalanddietaryinformation.”

supposedtoregulate.Ononehand,theUSDAiscompilingdietaryadvice.Ontheother,their
clientsaeUSagriculturecompanies.
Thelineaboutkeepingtheguidelines'scopetonutritionanddietdoesn'tringquiterightwith
researchers.DavidWallinga,forexample,says,"Inpreviousguidelines,they'vealwaysbeen
concernedwiththingslikefoodsecurity——whichispresumablythemissionoftheUSDA.You
absolutelyneedtobeworriedaboutclimateimpactsandfuturesustainabilityifyouwantsecure
foodinthefuture."
