encounteredalongthewayforthepresenceofseeds.
TheyreportinthejournalBiotropicathatanativerodent(啮齿动物)knownasthewesternbunch-tailedrat
wascaughtoncamerahandlingwholefruitsonfouroccasions.Althoughtherewasnofootageoftheratbreaking
thefruitsopen,theteamdidchanceupon13fruitsthathadbeenchewedintoandhadtheirseedsremoved.Though
thebitemarkswerenotclearenoughtoidentifyaninitiator,thiswasclearevidencethataseed-distributinganimal
wasoutthere.Theythenfoundtheecologicalequivalentofasmokinggun:baobabseedsinsevendifferentpilesof
bush-pigfaces.
Whilethefindingisimportantinitsownright,italsoprovidesvaluableevidencethatintroducedspeciesmay
notbeentirelyharmful.Madagascar9spigs,forexample,thoughnotnative,havemadethemselvesessentialtothe
survivaloftrulynativespecies.SimilarrelationshipsaresuspectedtoholdinSouthAmericabetweenrabbitsnative
toEuropeandplantswithnoseeddistributors.ForDrAndriantsaralaza,thatsuggeststhefullecologicalroleof
introducedspeciesshouldbeconsideredbeforetalkofextinctionbegins.
