toleantowardswhatevertheyareinterestedin.Soifastudenthashisheadlowered

tolookathiswatch,itimplies

heisboredandjustcountingtheminutesfortheclasstoend.Iftwofriendsareleaningtheirheadstogether,theyareprobablywritingnotestoeachother.Ofcourse,noteveryonewholooksupispayingattentioninclass.Somestudentslookup,butthereisanabsenceofeyecontact.Theireyesbarely

move,andtheyalwayshavethesamedistantexpressionontheirfaces.Itisasthoughtheyareasleepwiththeireyesopen.Somestudentsareamusedbysomethingelse.Theyspendalltheirtimelookinganywherebutatme.Thenagain,somestudents’

favouriteactivityisdaydreaming.Withtheirchins

ontheirhands,theyoccupy

themselvesbystaring

outofthewindoworupattheceiling.Theyarecertainlyinterestedinsomething,butwhoknowswhat.Themainthingisremindingdistractedstudentsthattheyneedtopayattentioninclass.Whileitiseasytoperceive

whenstudentsareinterested,bored,ordistracted,itissometimesmuchhardertodistinguish

whenstudentsaretroubled.Studentswhoareangry,afraid,orexperiencinganxiety

mayhavetheirarmscrossedinfrontoftheirchests

andtheirlegsclosedorcrossed,liketheyareguardingtheirbodies.Studentswhoaresadorworriedwillnearlyalwayswearafrown.Theymayalsohidetheirfacesintheirhandsliketheyareembarrassedorashamed.Somestudentsactthiswaymerely

becausetheyareafraidofbeingcalledonbytheteacher.However,ifastudentdoesnotbother

tobrushherhairandhereyesareredfromweeping,thenIcaninferthattherearedeeperissuesatwork.Itcouldbethatsheishaving

seriousconflicts

withotherstudentsorathome.Whateveritis,IknowIneedtoinquire

andassesswhatisgoingon.Ultimately,mydutyishelpingeverystudenttolearn.Theirbodylanguageletsmeknowwhento
