Thecourseisdesignedtoincreasestudents'controlofSpanishgrammarsotheycanmoreaccuratelyandcorrectlyexpressthemselvesinwrittenandspokenSpanish.Asecondarygoalistodevelopstudents'understandingoftheterminologyandrulesofgrammarsotheycanbetterunderstandhowthelanguagefunctionsandbebetterpreparedforthepossibilityofteachingitinthefuture.Toachievethesegoalsandtoincreasestudent'sreadingandlisteningabilitiesinSpanish,studentswillberequiredto:

Readallassignedgrammarexplanationsinthetextbookandlearntheprincipalgrammaticalrulesforeachsection.ThebookiswritteninSpanish.StudentsareencouragedtoconsultotherreferencematerialsincludingonesinEnglish,butmustreadourtextbookandlearntheterminologyituses.

Doalltheassignedgrammarexercisesfromthetextbookandanyassignedhandoutspriortoclass.Studentsaretoprepareseveralexercisesforatypicalclassperiod.Inviewofthelargenumberofstudentsenrolledinthisyear'scourse,theprofessorwillnotbeabletogrademostassignments,buttheywillbecoveredinclassatleastinpartand/ordailyquizzesmightbebasedontheassignments.

Doalltheexercisesintheworkbook.Thesewillnotbegradedbytheprofessorsincethisworkisgenerallyself-correcting;thatis,studentsshoulddotheexercises,thencomparetheiranswerstothoseappearinginthebackofthebook.Theworkbookswillcollectedandspot-checkedduringtheregularlyscheduledtests.

Showmasteryofthematerialinthefivescheduledtestsandanyquizes.Thecontentofeachtest,includingtosomeextentthefinalexam,willfocusprimarilyonthematerialcoveredsincetheprevioustest;however,languageisacumulativeprocess,andmaterialcoveredinearlierchaptersmustnecessarilyreappearinsubsequenttests.[Aprojectofsometypemayalsoberequired,butafinaldecisionhasnotbeenmade.]
