largenumberofvehiclesthatenterthecityeachday.Tobattlewiththisissue,Madrid'scity

plannersareconstructinga75-kilometer-longMetropolitanForest,whichisoneofthemost

ambitiousinitiativesofitskindinEurope.Thisforestwillconsistof1.5milliontreesofspecies

nativetoMadrid,alongwitheco-friendlybridgesandrecreationalcenters.Additionally,a

23-kilometer-longForestAvenueforcyclistsandpedestrianswillconnectthenewforestwith

existingparks,schools,offices,andtheairport.In20years,theMetropolitanForestshouldbeable

toremovemorethan800,000tonnesofCO2fromthecity'satmosphere.

Theideafortheforestwasbomin2019whenMadridcouncilorsforurbandevelopment

askedthechildrenwhatkindofMadridtheywouldliketoseein2040.Thedominatingresponse

wasa"greenwhichmotivatedthecitycounciltoplanseriously.Thecitycouncilhasbeen

awareofMadrid'senvironmentalproblemssincethe1990s,butitwasn'tuntil2019,whena
