justicewascommoninGreekpoetryanddrama.Theclassicexampleofitisfoundintheplay

OedipusRexbySophocles.AnoracleprophesizesthatOedipuswillkillhisfatherandmarryhis

mother.Defyingthegodsandrebellingagainsthisfate,Oedipusfleeswhathebelievestobehis

homelandandheadsforthekingdomofThebes.Duringhisjourney,hequarrelswithastranger

onaroadandkillstheman,andthenhewedstheking'swidow.Unbeknownsttohim,the

strangerwashisfatherandthewomanhismother;theyhadabandonedhimasababy,andhe

hadbeenraisedinaforeignland.IntheGreekmind,Oedipuswasrightlypunishedforattempting

toalterhisdestiny,whichonlythegodscoulddetermine.

TheplaysofWilliamShakespeareaboundwithexamplesofpoeticjusticeaswell.Hamlethas

whattypeofrockandsoilareunderneathit,theamountofrainfalltheareagets,thepresenceof

nearbyriversandlakes,andtheamountofwaterthatisconsumedbyhumans.Layersofsolid

bedrockbeneaththesaturatedzonelimititsdepthwhilethepresenceofmoreporousrocksand

soilcausesittobedeeper.Heavyrainfallmeansthatmorewaterseepsintoitandthatwater

existsingreaterconcentrations.Riversandlakes,however,tendtodrainwaterfromthe

saturatedzoneassomegeologistsestimatethatuptothirtypercentofthewaterinsomerivers

comesfromthesaturatedzone.Finally,whenhumansdigwellstotakewaterfromtheground,

thesaturatedzonegetsdepletedofwater.

Theareabetweentheunsaturatedandsaturatedzonesisanarrowregionthathasbeen

termedthecapillaryfringezone.Inthisplace,whichvariesinthicknessfromafewcentimetersto
