previousone.Thegraduationrateamong25-to34-year-oldsisnobetterthantherateforthe55-to

64-year-oldswhoweregoingtocollegemorethan30yearsago.Studiesshowthatmoreandmorepoor

andnon-whitestudentswanttograduatefromcollege-buttheirgraduationratesfallfarshortof

theirdreams.Thegraduationratesforblacks,Latinos,andNativeAmericanslagfarbehindthe

graduationratesforwhitesandAsians.AstheminoritypopulationgrowsintheUnitedStates,low

collegegraduationratesbecomeathreattonationalprosperity.

Theproblemispronouncedatpublicuniversities.IntheUniversityofWisconsin-Madison-oneof

thetopfiveorsoprestigiouspublicuniversities-graduated81%ofitswhitestudentswithinsixyears,

butonly56%ofitsblacks.Atless-selectivestateschools,thenumbersgetworse.Duringthesametime

frame,theUniversityofNorthernIowagraduated67%ofitswhitestudents,butonly39%ofits

blacks.Communitycollegeshavelowgraduationratesgenerally-butrock-bottomratesfor

minorities.ArecentreviewofCaliforniacommunitycollegesfoundthatwhileathirdoftheAsian

studentspickeduptheirdegrees,only15%ofAfrican-Americansdidsoaswell.
