15-yearoldblindFrenchstudent,developedaraiseddotreadingsystemin1824.

TheideacametohimfromthedotcodepunchedoncardboardthatCaptainCharles

Barbierusedtosendmessagestohissoldiersatnight.

In1829,Braillepublishedadotsystem,basingitona"cell"ofsixdots.

Fromthe63possiblearrangementsofthedots,Brailleworkedoutanalphabet,

punctuationmarks,numerals,and,later,asystemforwritingmusic.Hiscodewas

notofficiallyacceptedatonce.Butlateritwonuniversalacceptanceforallwritten

languagesandformathematics,science,andcomputernotation.

Blindpeoplereadbraillebyrunningtheirfingersalongonthedots.They

canwritebrailleona6-keymachinecalledabraillewriter,orwithapocket-size

metalorplasticslate.

Braillebooksarepressedfrommetalplates.Thecharactersarestampedon

bothsidesofthepaperbyamethodcalledinter-pointing.Dotsononesideofthe

pagedonotinterferewiththoseprintedontheother.Intheearly1960,s,publishers

beganusingcomputerstospeedupproductionofbraillebooks.Thetextistyped

intoacomputerthatautomaticallytranslatesitintobraille.Thecomputerthen

transferstheraisedbraillefiguresontopaperorontometalplatesforuseinapress.

Byanothermethod,avacuumbrailleformerduplicateshand-transcribedbraille
