EveryweekwetellaboutsomeonewhowasimportantinthehistoryoftheUnitedStates.
Thisweekwefinishthestoryofawriterandeducator,HelenKeller.
Shehelpedmillionsofpeoplewho,likeher,wereblindanddeaf.
WereportedlastweekthatHelenKellersufferedfromastrangesicknesswhenshewasonly
nineteenmonthsold.Itmadehercompletelyblindanddeaf.
Forthenextfiveyearsshehadnowayofsuccessfullycommunicatingwithotherpeople.
Then,ateacher—AnneSullivan—arrivedfromBostontohelpher.
MissSullivanherselfhadoncebeenblind.ShetriedtoteachHelentolivelikeotherpeople.
Shetaughtherhowtouseherhandsasawayofspeaking.
MissSullivantookHelenoutintothewoodstoexplorenature.
Theyalsowenttothecircus,thetheater,andeventofactories.
MissSullivanexplainedevetythinginthelanguagesheandHelenused-
alanguageoftouch—offingersandhands.
Helenalsolearnedhowtorideahorse,toswim,torowaboatand,eventoclimbtrees.
HelenKelleroncewroteabouttheseearlydays.
"Onebeautifulspringmorning1wasaloneinmyroom,reading.
Suddenly,awonderfulsmellintheairmademegetupandputoutmyhands.
Thespiritofspringseemedtobepassinginmyroom.'Whatisit?'1asked.
ThenextminuteIknewitwascomingfromthemimosatreeoutside.
"Iwalkedoutsidetotheedgeofthegarden,towardthetree.
Thereitwas,shakinginthewarmsunshine.
Itslongbranches,soheavywithflowers,almosttouchedtheground.
Iwalkedthroughtheflowerstothetreeitselfandthenjuststoodsilent.
ThenIputmyfootonthetreeandpulledmyselfupintoit.
IclimbedhigherandhigheruntilIreachedalittleseat.
Longagosomeonehadputitthere.
Isatforalongtime...Nothinginalltheworldwaslikethis."
Later,Helenlearnedthatnaturecouldbecruelaswellasbeautiful.
Strangelyenoughshediscoveredthisinadifferentkindoftree.
"OnedaymyteacherandIwerereturningfromalongwalk.
Itwasafinemorning.Butitstartedtogetwarmandheavy.
Westoppedtoresttwoorthreetimes.
Ourlaststopwasunderacherrytreeashortwayfromthehouse.
"Theshadewasniceandthetreewaseasytoclimb.MissSullivanclimbedwithme.
Itwassocoolupinthetreewedecidedtohavelunchthere.
Ipromisedtositstilluntilshewenttothehouseforsomefood.
Suddenlyachangecameoverthetree.
Iknewtheskywasblackbecausealltheheat,whichmeantlighttome,haddiedoutoftheair.
Astrangeodorcameuptomefromtheearth.
1knewit—itwastheodorwhichalwayscomesbeforeathunderstorm.
"Ifeltalone,cuto任fromfriends,highabovethefirmearth.
1wasfrightened,andwantedmyteacher.Iwantedtogetdownfromthattreequickly.
ButIwasnohelptomyself.Therewasamomentofterriblesilence.
"Thenasuddenandviolentwindbegantoshakethetreeanditsleaveskeptcomingdown
allaroundme.Ialmostfell.Iwantedtojump,butwasafraidtodoso.
Itriedtomakemyselfsmallinthetree,asthebranchesrubbedagainstme.
JustasIthoughtthatboththetreeandIweregoingtofall,
ahandtouchedme...Itwasmyteacher.
1heldherwithallmystrengththenshookwithjoytofeelthesolidearthundermyfeet."
MissSullivanstayedwithHelenformanyyears.
ShetaughtHelenhowtoread,howtowriteandhowtospeak.
Shehelpedhertogetreadyforschoolandcollege.
MorethananythingHelenwantedtodowhatothersdid,anddoitjustaswell.
Intime,Helendidgotocollegeandcompletedherstudieswithhighhonors.
Butitwasahardstruggle.FewofthebookssheneededwerewrittenintheBraillelanguage
thattheblindcouldreadbytouchingpages.
MissSullivanandothershadtoteachherwhatwasinthesebooksbyformingwordsinherhands.
Thestudyofgeometryandphysicswasespeciallydifficult.
Helencouldonlylearnaboutsquares,triangles,andothergeometricalformsbymakingthemwithwires.
Shekeptfeelingthedifferentshapesofthesewiresuntilshecouldseetheminhermind.
Duringhersecondyearatcollege,MissKellerwrotethestoryofherlifeandwhatcollegemeanttoher.
Thisiswhatshewrote:"MyfirstdayatRadcliffeCollegewasofgreatinterest.
Somepowerfulforceinsidememademetestmymind.
Iwantedtolearnifitwasasgoodasthatofothers."Ilearnedmanythingsatcollege.
Onething,Islowlylearnedwasthatknowledgedoesnotjustmeanpower,assomepeoplesay.
Knowledgeleadstohappiness,becausetohaveitistoknowwhatistrueandreal.
"Toknowwhatgreatmenofthepasthavethought,saidanddoneistofeeltheheartbeatof
humanitydownthroughtheages."
AllofHelenKeller'sknowledgereachedhermindthroughhersenseoftouchandsmell,
andofcourseherfeelings.Toknowaflowerwastotouchit,feelit,andsmellit.
Thissenseoftouchbecamegreatlydevelopedasshegotolder.
Sheoncesaidthathandsspeakalmostasloudlyaswords.
Shesaidthetouchofsomehandsfrightenedher.
Thepeopleseemsoemptyofjoythatwhenshetouchedtheircoldfingers
itisasifshewereshakinghandswithastorm.
Shefoundthehandsofothersfullofsunshineandwarmth.
Strangelyenough,HelenKellerlearnedtolovethingsshecouldnothear,musicforexample.
Shedidthisthroughhersenseoftouch.
Whenwavesofairbeatagainsther,shefeltthem.
Sometimessheputherhandtoasinger'sthroat.
Sheoftenstoodforhourswithherhandsonapianowhileitwasplayed.
Once,shelistenedtoanorgan.
Itspowerfulsoundsmadehermoveherbodyinrhythmwiththemusic.
Shealsolikedtogotomuseums.Shethoughtsheunderstoodsculptureaswellasothers.
Herfingerstoldherthetruesize,andthefeelofthematerial.

SheandMissSullivanbothwereknownfortheirsenseofhumor.
Theyenjoyedjokesandlaughingatfunnythingsthathappenedtothemselvesorothers.
HelenKellerhadtoworkhardtosupportherselfaftershefinishedcollege.
Shespoketomanygroupsaroundthecountry.Shewroteseveralbooks.
Andshemadeonemoviebasedonherlife.
Hermaingoalwastoincreasepublicinterestinthedifficultiesofpeoplewithphysicalproblems.
TheworkHelenKellerandAnneSullivandidhasbeenwrittenandtalkedaboutformanyyears.
