wasnolongerfreshtobirds.Notsurprisingly,thisattractedfewbirds.

Lateron,wediscoveredbirdfoodatthelocalstore.Feedinggardenbirds

intheUKhascomealongwaysincethen.Today,thebirdscanenjoy

manykindsoffood:fromplantseedstosunflowerheartsandfromcakes

Sometimes,Iwonderifwemightbefeedingourgardenbirdsbetterthan

ourkids.Butmaybeit'sworthit.Ourgenerosityishavinganimportant

effectonthebehaviorandevenevolution(进化)ofthesebirds.

Takethegoldfinchforexample.Inthe1960s,thiswasararebird.

Today,goldfinchescanbeseeninmanygardens.Othernewvisitors

includethespottedwoodpecker,whichhasleftitsusualwoodlandfor

foodonbirdtables.Evolutionismeanttoprogressslowly:over

thousandsofyears.Yetduringthepastfewdecades,thebeaks(鸟喙)of

manykindsofbirdshavebecomelongerbecausebirdswithlongerbeaks

cangetmorefood,andthenaremorelikelytoliveon.

Actually,theBritishhabitoffeedinggardenbirdsgoesbackmuch

further.Duringthesixthcentury,StSerfofFifefedarobininhisgarden;

duringthewinterof1890,workersinLondonwereseengivingtheir

lunchestosongbirds.Therealchangetookplaceinthe1980s,whena

fewfarsightedbusinessmenrealizedthatencouragingtheBritishtobe

moregeneroustogardenbirdscanhelpthemmakemoney.Therefore,

variouskindsofbirdfoodandmodernbirdfeederswereproduced.Asa

result,thenumberofspeciesusinggardenfeedingstationsincreasedvery

quickly,fromabout10toover100.Then,in2005,Springwatchcame,

whichturnedourloveofgardenbirdsintoanentertainmentshow.

Isbirdfeedingcompletelygoodforbirds?Noteveryonethinksso.

StudiesbytheZoologicalSocietyofLondonhaveshownthatbybringing

togethermanybirds,birdfeedersmayhelpthespreadofdisease.In

Australia,somebirdexpertsbelieve—probablywrongly—thatbird

feedingcreatesa“dependence(依赖)culture^^.

Butweshouldn'tforgetonemajorbenefitoffeedinggarden

birds—itconnectsmillionsofpeopletothenaturalworld.Thisis
