continuedtheworkbydevelopingXrayfacilitiesinmilitaryhospitalsinFranceand

Belgium.HerserviceswererecognizedintheformofaMilitaryMedalbytheFrench

government.

In1918,Irenebecamehermother'sassistantattheCurieInstitute.InDecember

1924,FredericJoliotjoinedtheInstitute,andIrenetaughthimthetechniquesrequired

forhiswork.Theysoonfellinloveandweremarriedin1926.TheirdaughterHelene

wasbornin1927andtheirsonPierrefiveyearslater.

Likehermother,Irenecombinedfamilyandcareer.Likehermother,Irenewas

awardedaNobelPrize,alongwithherhusband,in1935.Unfortunately,alsolikeher

mother,shedevelopedleukemiabecauseofherworkwithradioactivity(辐射能).
