inpunchcardsandkeeparunningtotalofdata.Capitalizingonhissuccess,Hollerithformedthe
TabulatingMachineCo.in1896.

machineryrangingfromcommercialscalesandindustrialtimerecorderstomeatandcheese
slicersand,ofcourse,tabulatorsandpunchcards.
ThomasJ.Watsonjoinedthecompanyasgeneralmanagerin1914,whenthediversified
businessesofC-T-Rproveddifficulttomanage.Watsonboostedcompanyspiritwithemployee
sportsteams,familyoutingsandacompanyband.Hepreachedapositiveoutlook,andhis
favoritesloganwas"THANK"._9_Heunderstoodthatthesuccessoftheclienttranslatedinto
thesuccessofhiscompany,abeliefthat,yearslater,manifesteditselfinthepopularsaying,
"NobodywaseverfiredforbuyingfromIBM."
Within11monthsofjoiningC-T-R,Watsonbecameitspresident.Thecompanyfocusedon
providinglarge-scale,custom-builttabulatingsolutionsforbusinesses,leavingthemarketfor
smallofficeproductstoothers.DuringWatson'sfirstfouryears,revenuesdoubledto$2million.
Healsoexpandedthecompany'soperationstoEurope,SouthAmerica,AsiaandAustralia._10_
DuringtheGreatDepressionofthe1930s,IBMmanagedtogrowwhiletherestoftheU.S.
economystruggled.Watsontookcareofhisemployees._11_Whilemostbusinesseshadshut
down,Watsonkepthisworkersbusyproducingnewmachinesevenwhiledemandwasslack.
Thankstotheresultinglargeinventoryofequipment,IBMwasreadywhentheSocialSecurityAct
of1935broughtthecompanyalandmarkgovernmentcontracttomaintainemploymentrecords
for26millionpeople.Itwascalled"thebiggestaccountingoperationofalltime,"anditwentso
wellthatordersfromotherU.S.governmentdepartmentsquicklyfollowed.
IBM'ssizeandsuccessinspirednumerousanti-trustactions.A1952suitbytheJustice
Department,settledfouryearslater,forcedIBMtosellitstabulatingmachines-atthetime,IBM
offeredthemonlythroughleases-inordertoestablishacompeting,used-machinemarket.
Anotherfederalanti-trustsuitdraggedonforthirteenyearsuntiltheJusticeDepartment
concludeditwas"withoutmerit"anddroppeditin1982._12_.

loan.Usuallynochargeismadeforinterestuntiltheloanismade.Atypicalinterestrateis3
centsper$100perday,orjustunder1%amonth.Supposethatyouused$100ofyourcreditand
repaiditin30days.Thecostwouldbe90cents.Ifyourepaiditin10days,thecostwouldbeonly
30cents.
Thereisanothersourceofconsumerloansthatmaybeevencheaperthanabank.Itisacredit
union.Butyouhavetobeamembertoborrowfromone.Acreditunionisacooperative.You
rememberthatacooperativeisabusinessorganizedtoprovideitsowners,ormembers,with
goodsorservicesatasaving.Likeabank,acreditunionisbothasavingsandalending

Consumerloansaresmallinamountcomparedtothosemadetobusinessfirms.Companies
