(2012•山东高考)ThePacificislandnationofNauruusedtobeabeautiful

place.Nowitisanecologicaldisasterarea.Nauru*sheartbreakingstorycouldhaveone

goodconsequence-othercountriesmightlearnfromitsmistakes.

Forthousandsofyears,Polynesianpeoplelivedontheremoteislandof

Nauru,farfromwesterncivilization.ThefirstEuropeantoarrivewasJohnFeamin

1798.HewastheBritishcaptainoftheHunter,awhalingship.Hecalledtheisland

PleasantIsland.

However,becauseitwasveryremote,Nauruhadlittlecommunication

withEuropeansatfirst.Thenwhalingshipsandothertradersbegantovisit,bringing

gunsandalcohol.Theseelementsdestroyedthesocialbalanceofthetwelvefamily

groupsontheisland.Aten-yearcivilwarstarted,whichreducedthepopulationfrom

1,400to900.

Nauru'srealtroublesbeganin1899whenaBritishminingcompany

discoveredphosphate(磷酸盐)ontheisland.Infact,itfoundthattheislandofNauru

wasnearlyallphosphate,whichisaveryimportantfertilizerforfarming.Thecompany

beganminingthephosphate.

Aphosphatemineisnotaholeintheground;itisastripmine.Whena

companystrip-mines,itremovesthetoplayerofsoil.Thenittakesawaythematerial

itwants.Strip-miningtotallydestroystheland.Gradually,thelovelyislandofNauru

startedtolooklikethemoon.

In1968,Naurubecameoneoftherichestcountriesintheworld.Every

yearthegovernmentreceivedmillionsandmillionsofdollarsforitsphosphate.

Unfortunately,theleadersinvestedthemoneyunwiselyandlostmillions

ofdollars.Inaddition,theyusedmillionsmoredollarsforpersonalexpenses.Soon

peoplerealizedthattheyhadaterribleproblem-theirphosphatewasrunning

out.Ninetypercentoftheirislandwasdestroyedandtheyhadnothing.By2000,Nauru
