FlowTechniques,BusinessSolutions,AgileE-Business,QuickBooks,PeachTree,QualityManagementMaterialRequirementsPlanningOverviewMaterialRequirementsPlanning(MRP)isdesignedtoassistmanufacturersininventoryandproductionmanagement.UsingMRPhelpsensurethatmaterialswillbeavailableinsufficientquantityandatthepropertimeforproductiontooccur,withoutincurringexcesscostsbyhavingthematerialsonhandtooearly.MRPassistsingeneratingand(asneeded)revisingproductionplanstomeetexpecteddemandsandreplenishmentplanstoassurethetimelyavailabilityofrawmaterialsandalllevelsofproductcomponents.MRPbeginsbycompilingaBillofMaterials(BOM)foreachendproductorcomponentofinterest.Thisisalistingofthecomponentsandquantitiesthatareneededtomanufacturetheendproductorcomponent.Theoretically,thecompilationofBOMscontinuesrecursively,enumeratingthesubcomponentsthatareneededtomanufactureeachcomponent,untilonlyrawmaterialsappearinthegeneratedBOMs.Inpractice,amanufacturermayprefertoextendtheBOMenumerationforonlyaspecifiednumberoflevelsandtoassumethatcomponentsand/orrawmaterialsbeneaththatlevelareavailableondemand.Next,MRPrequiresinformationontheleadtimesassociatedwitheachmanufacturingorassemblyprocedurethatisrequiredtoproducethecomponentsandendproducts.Leadtimeisthetimerequiredtoassembleormanufacturetheneededcomponentsintotheendproduct(orhigher-levelcomponent),andthusisthetimeelapsedbetweenthepointatwhichallneededcomponentsarepresentandtheendofassemblyormanufacturing.Theseleadtimesmaybecompiledperunitofeachcomponent/productormaybebasedonpredeterminedbatchsizes.MRPcombinestheBOMs,theleadtimes,andestimatesofdemandforendproductstogeneratetheMasterProductionSchedule,whichdetailsascheduleofassemblyandproductionthatenablesthemanufacturertomeettheestimateddemand.Thisscheduleaddressesonlythefinallevelofassemblyorproduction(resultinginendproducts),andincludesboththetimingandquantitiesofproduction.TheMasterProductionScheduleservesasthebasisforallfurtheroutputinformationfromMRP.UsingtheMasterProductionScheduleasastartingpoint,itisaconceptuallysimple(butcomputationallydemanding)tasktocombineitwiththedataonleadtimesandBOMstoderiveascheduleofcomponent(andpossiblyrawmaterials)requirements,throughasmanylevelsofassemblyandproductionasthemanufacturerchooses.Thisschedulecanaccountforsuchfactorsaswork-in-progress,currentinventoryofandpendingordersformaterialsandcomponents,anddirectdemandforcomponentsasserviceitems.Usingthisscheduleofrequirements,themanufacturermustdetermineamaterialreplenishmentstrategythatsatisfiestheserequirements.Awidevarietyoforderingrulesandheuristicscanbeincorporatedintocomputer-basedMRPmodels.Inadditiontothematerialrequirements,otherusefuldatacanbegeneratedfromtheMasterProductionSchedule.Theseincludetheprojectedinventorylevelsforanyendproduct,theprojectedscheduleforanyassemblyorproductionprocess,andtheprojectedutilizationofcapacityforaparticularproductionoperation.Anyofthisinformationshouldaidinevaluatingcurrentorpotentialmaterialsreplenishmentstrategies.Computersareinstrumentalinanyreal-worldimplementationofMRP,duetothelargeamountofdataprocessingrequiredtogenerateinitialmaterialrequirements.Additionally,it'sprobablethattheentireanalysiswillhavetoberepeatedseveraltimesinresponsetochangingconditions(forexample,changesindemand,manufacturingprocesses,ormaterialsup
