capturedthecityofAtlanta.FromAtlantahemarchedhistroopsthroughthe
heartofGeorgiatotheAtlanticOcean.ItwasknownasSherman'sMarchto
theSea.TheUniontroopsburnedallthehouses,farms,animalsandfood

makeoldandyoung,richandpoorfeelthehardhandofwar."
ThepeopleofSavannahlearnedwhatGeneralShermanhaddonetotherest
ofGeorgia.Theydidnotwantthesamethingtohappentothem.Sothey
offeredtosurrendertheirbeautifulcityffhepromisednottobumit.General
Shermanacceptedtheoffer.InDecember,1864,hescmamessageto
PresidentAbrahamLincolninWashington.Itsaid,"Ibegtopresentyouasa
Christmasgift-thecityofSavannah."Sherman'sgiftincluded150heavy
guns,ammunitionand25thousandbalesofcotton.
TheCivilWarhurtSavannah'seconomy.Andyearsofgrowingnothingbut
cottondamagedthesoil.Aninsectcalledthebollweevildestroyedtheplant.
By1920,littlecottonwasleft.Duringthe1900s,manufacturingtookthe
