advocating
innovation.

for
the
year
ahead.The
Advisory
Board
engages
in
discussion
via
CoSN’s
online
forum,
synchronous
virtual
calls
via
Zoom,
and
alsoparticipates
in
two
surveys
toselect
the
top
themes
in
each
category
that
are
transforming
teaching
and
learning.This
year,the
Advisory
Board’s
work
took
place
overapproximately
10
weeks.METHODOLOGYSTEP

INITIAL
SURVEYThe
Advisory
Board
completed
an
initial
survey
toselect
the
topics
for
subsequent
discussion.
This
surveynarrowed
down
the
original
list
ofHurdles
from
38
tonine,
Accelerators
from
26
to10,
and
TechEnablers
from
28
tonine
—
including
one
new
Hurdle
and
one
new
Accelerator.STEP
2:
DISCUSSIONSixweeksoffruitful
virtual
conversationfollowedtheinitialsurvey.Eachweek,
theAdvisoryBoardrespondedtopromptsand
engagedinconversationfocusedon
one
ofthelenses
oftheinitiative(Hurdles,Accelerators,and
Tech
Enablers).Discussionopportunitieswereofferedviatheonline
forumand
asynchronousZoomcallforeach
lens.STEP

is

toinnovate
as
weexplore
K-12
education
ofthe
future.
And
while
Gen
AI
may
provide
additional
power,educators
and
technologists
remain
the
ones
who
are
the
drivers
ofinnovation.“I
see
Gen
AI
as
another
tool
in
the
classroom
weshould
use,
such
as
the
calculator
and
other
digital
applications.These
tools
did
not
necessarily
increase/decrease
the
number
ofteachers;
however,they
give
students
directaccess
totools
and
fast
feedback.
These
tools
can
accelerate
learning
and
hopefully,
engage
the
learner”

Professionals,
there
are
the
added
stressors
of
industry
comparison,
as
many
private
companies
are
abletooffer
higher
salaries,
flexible
work
schedules
and
locations,
and
more
time
off.For
the
third
year
in
a
row,Attracting
&
RetainingEducators
and
IT
Professionals
has
made
it
intotheTop
3
Hurdles
(obstacles)on
our
annual
list.
And
whileeducators
are
feeling
more
satisfied
at
work
than2022’s
all-timelow,
about
twice
as
manyteachersand
principals
in
a
RANDCorpsurvey
reportedexperiencing
frequent
job-related
stress
comparedtothe
general
population
ofworking
adults.our
staff.”Launched
in
2023,the
district’s
latestcampaign,
Growing
Stronger
Together,is
focused
onliving
out
the
district’s
mission
statement:
To
inspireand
nurture
every
student...one
opportunity
at
a
time.“We
haveextended
the
statement
toinclude
inspiringand
nurturing
every
staff
member,
as
well,”
said
May-Vollmar.“We
haveseen
a
huge
growth
in
staff
morale,and
webelieve
this
will
translate
toattracting
andretaining
educators
and
IT
professionals.
We
know
thatwecan't
always
throw
money
at
issues,
but
wecanalways
create
a
work
environment
that
draws
people
inand
makes
them
want
to
stay.”In
addition
towork
stress
hindering
educators
fromstaying
in
the
field,
Gen
Z
is
less
interested
in
becomingteachers
than
in
previous
years.
DistrictAdministrationreported
in
September2023that
there
is
a
sharp
dropin
students
leaving
college
with
a
teaching
degree
—from
about
192,700
in
2013
to159,000
last
schoolyear.CoSN
Board
Chair
Diane
Doersch
(Digital
Promise,United
States)added
that
it
all
comes
down
totheschool
district
and
department
culture.
“As
hiringmanagers,
are
wedoing
enough
topromote
our
schooldistrict's
culture
so
that
weattract
candidates
whowant
towork
for
us?”
asked
Doersch.
“We
know
thathaving
a
positive
culture
where
staff
and
studentsfeel
seen
and
heard
makes
a
difference.
Likeone
ofmyteaching
colleagues
said
long
ago,
‘It
doesn't
costanything
tosmile.’
How
can
wehelp
leaders
be
thebosses
people
want
tocome
and
work
for?
Culture
anda
feeling
ofbelonging
is
a
start
in
working
toattract
andretain
professionals.”
Supporting
underrepresentedpopulations
is
an
important
piece
ofthis
culture
work.Advisory
Board
Member
&
Superintendent
KellyMay-Vollmar(Desert
Sands
Unified
School
District,California,
United
States)recognized
these
strugglesin
her
district
and
launched
a
campaign
in
2022—Reconnecting:
Listen,
Learn,
Grow
Together—
in
aneffort
tobuild
back
the
respect
that
teachers
feel
hasbeen
missing.
“The
campaign
included
a
visit
toeveryschool
site
tolisten
tostaff
and
their
concerns
and
toexpress
gratitude
for
their
service,”
said
May-Vollmar.“We
also
had
multiple
opportunitiestointeract
withfamilies
and
the
community
throughout
the
year
in
aneffort
toconnect,
find
common
ground,
and

ability

especially
for
today’sK-12
education
ITprofessionals
—
are
still
areas
in
need
ofimprovement.“Retention
ofIT
workers
in
public
school
settings
isvery
important”
(Michael
Fort,
Baltimore
County
PublicSchools,
Maryland,
United
States).
“Allowingfor
remotework
is
a
keypart
ofattraction
and
retention.
Mostpublic
school
workers
do
need
toreport
on
site,
but
ITworkers
can
very
often
at
least
work
in
a
hybrid
fashiontomaximize
employee
satisfaction
and
efficiency.”4

all
know
that
educator
recruitment
andretention
is
vitally
important
rightnow.
Thepandemic
only
exacerbated
the
already
slowinggrowth.
This
is
inclusive
ofboth
STEM/technologyeducators
and
