whoweredemonstratingfrontrunnerleadershipinFourthIndustrialRevolutioninnovation.TheForum,incollaborationwithMcKinsey&Company,scannedthousandsofleadingmanufacturersinsearchofthemostadvancedsites,leadingtotheidentificationofthefirst16lighthouses,whichrangedfromglobalbluechipstosmalllocalbusinesseswithfewerthan100

employees.Thenetworkcontinuedtogrow,becominganeutralcollaborationplatformtoacceleratethe

adoptionofFourthIndustrialRevolutiontechnologiesinmanufacturingthroughnewalliances,partnershipsandashared,cross-industrylearningjourney.

enabledimprovementsonenvironmentalfootprint.Lighthousesareleaderswhohaveembraced

vision,innovationandresponsibilityastheyadoptadvancedtechnologiesacrossproductionnetworksandbeyond,unlockingvaluewhileprioritizing

environmentalsustainability.TheyhavebeentheleadauthorsoftheFourthIndustrialRevolution’sopeningchapter–acompellingstorytoldacrossaseriesofwhitepapersexploringtheevolutionoftechnologydeploymentfromfactoriestovaluechainsend-to-endandbeyond.Alongtheway,lighthouseshaveleftwaypointsthatotherscanfollowtoemulate

transformationatscaleacrossproductionnetworksandbeyond.Thismeansatmultiplemanufacturingsites,withthousandsofpeople;moreover,itmeansextendingtechnologydeploymentevenbeyondtosuppliersandcustomers,ortowardnewfunctionslikeresearchanddevelopment(R&D),procurementandlogistics.Anongoing,criticalaspectofstrategywillbesuccessfullyengagingtheworkforcetoencourageFourthIndustrialRevolutiontechnologyadoption.

valuablelookathowfrontrunnershavetakentheirplaceasleaders,progressingonrealistictime

horizonswithamatureunderstandingofresourcesandenablersneededtoscale.Astheyhavedoneso,theyhaveestablishedscalingwaypoints,

enablingothercompaniestoengageina“smart

followerstrategy”thattakesadvantageofwhattheyhavelearnedalongtheway–particularlyabout

wheretoinvesteffortsformaximumimpact.

Executivesummary

Since2018,lighthousesrecognizedbytheWorld

EconomicForum,workingincollaborationwith

McKinsey&Company,havebeenfrontrunnersoftheFourthIndustrialRevolution.Theirabilitytodriveimpactatscaleinallgeographiesandsectorshasremainedtheessentialdifferentiator,evenasthe

challengeshavechangedwithtime.Atotalof142usecasesresultingindouble-digitimprovementsinfinancial,operationalandsustainabilitymetricsaretheirmarkersofsuccess.

AnewchapteroftheFourthIndustrialRevolution–scalingadvancedtechnologiesthroughout

productionnetworksandbeyond–isunder

wayamidcontinuingmajorglobaldisruptions

thatincludesoaringenergypricesandinflation,talentshortages,supplychaindisruption,and

theincreasingimpactofclimatechange.Againstthisbackdrop,asurveywasconductedto

understandthepositionsoflighthouseandnon-lighthousecompaniesonthisnextchapter.Theresultsrevealedthetopthreestrategicprioritiesofrespondentsacrossallindustriesandregions:

productivity,sustainabilityandresilience–andthescalingofFourthIndustrialRevolutiontechnologiesacrossproductionnetworksisconsideredahigh-impactlevertoachievethesebymost.

Thistypeofscaling,however,isdifficult.Whilemostcompanieshavebeenconfidentaboutemerging

outofpilotpurgatoryforseveralyears,relatively

fewwereabletomovequicklyfromconceptto

executionofusecases.Similarly,scalingFourth

IndustrialRevolutiontechnologiesacrossallfacilitiesofacompany’sproductionnetworkissignificantlymoredifficultthandeployinginonefacility.

Lighthousesareawareofwhatittakestosucceedandrealisticaboutthetimeitwilltake,whereas

manyothermanufacturerssurveyedhavealessconcreteunderstanding.

Thisapparent“awarenessgap”isatellingsign:88%oflighthouseorganizationsreporttobe

onoraheadoftheirscheduleforscalingFourthIndustrialRevolutiontoatleasthalfoftheir

productionnetwork,whileonly60%ofnon-

lighthousesrunonscheduleandnoneahead

ofschedule.Whenstartingthejourneytowardsdigitalization,organizationswouldthusdowellto

berealisticwiththeirtimelinesandtoconsidera

widevarietyofcontingencies.Whileonly7%of

productionnetworksareconsideredadvancedintheuseofadvancedtechniquesfornon-lighthousecompanies,ityields20%forthelighthouses.

Whenaskedabouttheprincipalobstacleof

scaling,mostnon-lighthousespointtoalackof

leadershipcommitmentandinvestment,whereaslighthousesconsideralackofstrategythe

principalobstacle.Regardingthetopenablersofdigitalization,lighthousesoverwhelminglyconsiderworkforceengagementandtransformationofficestobethemostcritical.

Thesedifferencesrepresentanawarenessgap

aboutwhatittakestoscale.Ifnon-lighthouses

engageina“smartfollowerstrategy”,takingintoaccountwhatlighthouseshavealreadylearned,

theywillbeabletoscalefasterandavoidpitfalls.Itstartsbyrecognizingthethreemust-haves

forsuccess.First,buildaclear,value-driven

strategy.Withoutcleardirection,thebreadth

ofpossibilitiesandthevarietyofusecasesand

technologiesthreatentomireorganizationsin

pilotpurgatory.Second,investinpeople.Withouttherightresourceandcapabilitymodels,a

transformationwillsoonrunoutofresourcesandsteam.Third,setuptherightgovernance.Withoutvalueassuranceandgovernance–coupled

withtherightexecutionengine–companies

cannotcapturethevaluetheyseekorgeneraterealimpact.Casestudiesprovidedhereinwillconcretelyillustratethesemust-haves.

Asmanufacturersbeginthenextchapterofthe

FourthIndustrialRevolution,thechallengeisto

achievescalingacrossproductionnetworksand

beyond,tosuppliersandcustomers,andtowards

newfunctions.Organizationsmustredoubletheir

commitmenttothestrategiesforresponsible

growth,workingbothhardandsmartbyengagingkeyenablersforproductivitygainswhileprioritizingsustainabilityandworkforcedevelopment.Thisisthecallfortheglobalmanufacturingcommunity:join

theGlobalLighthouseNetworktofurtherlearnfromlighthousesandtofollowtheirexample,orbecomepartofthegroupofleadersthatlightsthewaytothenextchapteroftheFourthIndustrialRevolution.

Adynamicnetworkcontinuestoexpand

ThesizeoftheGlobalLighthouseNetworkshowsthatFourthIndustrialRevolution

technologiesarebeingadoptedatscale.

TheworldhasundergonefundamentalchangessincetheearlydaysoftheFourthIndustrialRevolution.FromtheperspectiveoftheGlobalLighthouseNetwork,

thatrevolutioncrystallizedin2018withtherecognitionofthefirstmanufacturingfrontrunnersaslighthouses.

Detailedanalysisofmanysitesyieldedasmall

groupoffrontrunnerswhoweredoingsomethingspecial.Theabilitytoengagetransformationatscalewastheessentialdifferentiatorthenand

remainssonow.Thechallengeshavechanged

withtime,however,andsotoohavetherequisiteapproachestobuildandmaintainmomentum.

Itisknownthatforanyproductionnetworkto

succeedeconomicallyandsustainably,itmust

succeedbothlocallyandglobally.MembersoftheGlobalLighthouseNetworkhavecrystallizedhow

FourthIndustrialRevolutiontechnologyandworkingmodescanhelpcompaniessucceedatbothlevelswhilebeingmoreresilienttoafuturereshufflingof

productionnetworks.

Since2018,theGlobalLighthouseNetworkhas

growntoinclude132membersitesselectedbyanindependentexpertpanel.Thisincludes29new

lighthousesin2022andthedesignationofsevensustainabilitylighthouses.Thenetworkspans

industrysectorsfromconsumer-packagedgoods,processindustriesandadvancedindustries,to

pharmaceuticalandmedicalproducts.

Justastheyhavesincethenetwork’sinception,thesesiteshavedemonstratedimpactacrossoperationalperformanceindicators,includingsustainability,

productivity,agility,speedtomarketandcustomization.
