hadenteredthefield,andtheunfortunateinventorJohnFitchhadbuiltaworkingsteamshipalready.

ButlikeHenryFord,Fulton,stalentlaynotintheinventionbutintheproduct,sapplicationinthe

marketplace.

Fultondidn,tfocusentirelyonthesteamboat.In1804,hetestedthefirstsubmarinesuccessfully,

whichhehadbuiltfortheBritishRoyalNavy.Hisinventionwouldmakehimacelebrityuponhis

returntotheUnitedStatestwoyearslater.Fulton,spartnerRobertLivingstonobtainedanexclusive

licenseforsteamboatservicesonNewYork,sHudsonRiver.ItwastimeforFultontodeliver.

intotwelvetemporalorseasonalhours.Atemporalhourwasonetwelfthofthetimefromsunriseto

sunset.Similarly,theydividedthenightintotwelvehoursfromsunsettosunrise.Theseperiods

becameknownastemporalhoursbecausetheirdurationvariedaccordingtothechanginglengthof

daysandnightswiththepassingoftheseasons.Inthedaytime,summerhourswerelong,andwinter
