Hundredsofvolunteersresponded,includingWilliamChesterMinor.Dr.MinorwasanAmerican

surgeonwhohadservedintheCivilWarandwasnowlivinginEngland.Hegavehisaddressas

ςςBroadmoor,Crowthome,Berkshire,,,50milesfromOxford.

MinorjoinedthearmyofvolunteerssendingwordsandquotationstoMurray.Overthenext

17years,hebecameoneofthestafif,smostvaluedcontributors.

Buthewasalsoamystery.Inspiteofmanyinvitations,hewouldalwaysdeclinetovisit

Oxford.Soin1897,MurrayfinallydecidedtotraveltoCrowthornehimself.Whenhearrived,he

foundMinorlockedinabook-linedcellattheBroadmoorAsylumfortheCriminallyInsane.

MurrayandMinorbecamefriends,sharingtheirloveofwords.Minorcontinuedcontributing

tothedictionary,sendinginmorethan10,000submissionsin20years.Murraycontinuedtovisit

Minorregularly,sometimestakingwalkswithhimaroundtheasylumgrounds.In1910,Minorleft

BroadmoorforanasyluminhisnativeAmerica.Murraywasattheporttowavegoodbyetohis

remarkablefriend.

Minordiedin1920,sevenyearsbeforethefirsteditionoftheOxfordEnglishDictionarywas

completed.The12volumesdefined414,825words,andthousandsofthemwerecontributions

fromaveryscholarlyanddevotedasylumpatient.
