“Whyareyoudoingthis?Don’tyouknowit’satotalwasteoftime?”That’swhatmymomyelledattheten-year-oldme,whenshefoundoutthatIhadsignedupforanEnglishstory-tellingcompetition.

Ibowedmyhead;yes,shewasright.BythenIwasenteringGradeSi*,facedwiththebiggestchallengeyettocome—thee*aminationtoentermydreamjuniorhighschool.Forthat,Ihadgivenupmybelovedpianolesson,myfavoritecartoonprogramandeventheplayfulweekendfamilyreunionwithmycousins.Iwouldn’tbesurprisedatallifmyvery-strict-university-teachermothergotfuriousatmewhenIchosetodoanythingbesidesstudyatthatcrucialmoment.

Butthat’snotalltoit.Nowpleasetakeagoodlookatthetwenty-year-oldme,andimaginewhatIwaslikewhenIwasten.Herearethekeywords:nervous,timid,shy,tongue-tiedwhenfacingstrangers,andessentiallyabookworm.Thesesignslookedfataltomymother,andpossiblytoyou,too;shethoughtthatIcouldbeanythingbutagoodpublicspeaker.

Well,ImyselfactuallysaidnotomyEnglishteacheratfirst,becauseIhadneverdoneanythinglikethatbeforeandIwasafraid.ButhetoldmesinceIlikedreadingsomuch,whynottrytotellastoryIlovetoeveryone?Healsopromisedmethatthejudgeswerenotfrighteningatall;justthinkofthemascarrotsandcabbagesinavegetablepatch.

Theten-year-oldmewaspersuadedbymyteacher’swords.Thefeelingoftellingmybelovedstoriestosomeoneelseignitedasparkofanticipationinmylittlechest.SoIchosetoenduremymother’srantingforanentirehour,thenraisedmyheadbravelyandpleaded:“Mom,please.Ijustwanttotry.”

Mymotherlookedasifshewasonthevergeofanotheroutburst—butsheonlysighed.Itookthatasherpermission,andstartedworkingwithmyteacherdayandnighttofindastory,toillustratethedetails,andtopracticemyfaciale*pressionsandgesturesinfrontofthemirror.Onthedayofthecompetition,Iwentonthestagefortheveryfirsttimeinmylife;Icouldfeelthenervousnessthreateningtobringmedown,andIfeltcheatedbymyteacher:itwasimpossibletopicturethejudgesasmerecarrotsandcabbages.ButIwenton.AlthoughIonlygotthethirdprizeatthattime,onthatstageIstayedeversince,eventothisverymoment.

IshouldthankmyteacherandmymotherforlettingmetakearoadthatIhavenevertakenbefore.LittledidIknowthenthatthisroadwouldonedayleadtheshylittleten-year-oldmeintoawonderland;itledmetomeetallofyouheretoday.Icantellyoufromthebottomofmyheartthatitisn’tsoterrifyingtoventureintotheunknownatall;allyouneedisalittlecourageanddetermination.Seewheremyroadhasledme,andbravelytakeyourfirststep.

Iwasseventeen,almostaseniorinhighschool.Iwasridingmybiketoschool.Ihadtakenaspecialroutetopickupagift,butthatday,theroadlesstraveledbyledtodisaster.Crossingaroad,adrunkdriverranaredlight,slammedintome,andshatteredmyleftknee.

Itmadeallthedifference.

Iwasforcedtopostponecollege,plungedintopainfultherapy...buteventually,Ialsolearnedmuchaboutlifeandmyself.Ifoundthestrengthtowithstandadversity,learnedcompassion,andaboveall,Ilearnedthattheroadnottakenisnotjustaboutregretsorchoicesbutalsoabouttheperpetualnowandthealways-comingfuture.

WhenIfirststudiedRobertFrost’s“TheRoadNotTaken”inmiddleschool,Iwasunabletograspitsambiguity.IalwaysthoughtthatFrost’spersonachooses“aroadlesstraveledby”andliveslifebeingsubversiveandirreverent.Iwaswrong.Inthepoem,bothofthetworoadsthat“divergedinayellowwood”areactually“aboutthesame.”Buttherehastobeachoice,andsometimes,theyitcanbeinvoluntary(asIlearnedthehardway).Thismakesmee*tremelythankfulandresolutewhenIcanmakeconsciouschoicesandplanforthefuture,andsoIknownowthatFrostspoemisalsoabouttheroadnot[yet]taken.

Foreveryone,thismeanssomethingslightlydifferent.Forme,itmeansconstantvigilance,learning,andlove.Ourjourneyishard,comple*,anditoftenpresentsune*pectedtwists,butreflectingontheroadsnottakenandnotyettakeneachdaygivesusalittlemorestrengthandconfidence.Lifecannotandwillnotmeperfect,andthetruthisitwillend.ButasWillaCatherwouldsay,“Theendisnothing,theroadisall.”Theroadnottakeninthepast,andtheroadnotyettakenthatliesahead.

Butaboutthepresent?Itjointsthepastandthefuture.Whatthen,is“theroadnottaken”intheperpetualnow?Personally,IfindananswerintheselinesfromAlfredLordTennyson’s“Ulysses”:
