discoveringjusthowthedoomedherochosetospendhislastdaysorhis

lasthours.Ispeak,ofcourse,offreemenwhohaveachoice,not

condemnedcriminalswhosesphereofactivitiesisstrictlydelimited.

Suchstoriessetusthinking,wonderingwhatweshoulddounder

similarcircumstances.Whatevents,whatexperiences,whatassociations

shouldwecrowdintothoselasthoursasmortalbeings,whatregrets?

SometimesIhavethoughtitwouldbeanexcellentruletoliveeach

dayasifweshoulddietomorrow.Suchanattitudewouldemphasize

sharplythevaluesoflife.Weshouldliveeachdaywithgentleness,vigor

andakeennessofappreciationwhichareoftenlostwhentimestretches

beforeusintheconstantpanoramaofmoredaysandmonthsandyearsto

come.Therearethose,ofcourse,whowouldadopttheEpicureanmotto

of“Eat,drink,andbemerry”.Butmostpeoplewouldbechastenedbythe

certaintyofimpendingdeath.

Instoriesthedoomedheroisusuallysavedatthelastminuteby

somestrokeoffortune,butalmostalwayshissenseofvaluesischanged.

Hebecomesmoreappreciativeofthemeaningoflifeanditspermanent

spiritualvalues.Ithasoftenbeennotedthatthosewholive,orhavelived,

intheshadowofdeathbringamellowsweetnesstoeverythingtheydo.

Mostofus,however,takelifeforgranted.Weknowthatonedaywe

mustdie,butusuallywepicturethatdayasfarinthefuture.Whenweare

inbuoyanthealth,deathisallbutunimaginable.Weseldomthinkofit.

Thedaysstretchoutinanendlessvista.Sowegoaboutourpettytasks,

hardlyawareofourlistlessattitudetowardlife.

Thesamelethargy,Iamafraid,characterizestheuseofallour

facultiesandsenses.Onlythedeafappreciatehearing,onlytheblind

realizethemanifoldblessingsthatlieinsight.Particularlydoesthis

observationapplytothosewhohavelostsightandhearinginadultlife.

Butthosewhohaveneversufferedimpairmentofsightorhearingseldom

makethefullestuseoftheseblessedfaculties.Theireyesandearstakein

allsightsandsoundshazily,withoutconcentrationandwithlittle

appreciation.Itisthesameoldstoryofnotbeinggratefulforwhatwe

haveuntilweloseit,ofnotbeingconsciousofhealthuntilweareill.

Ihaveoftenthoughtitwouldbeablessingifeachhumanbeingwere

strickenblindanddeafforafewdaysatsometimeduringhisearlyadult

life.Darknesswouldmakehimmoreappreciativeofsight;silencewould

teachhimthejoysofsound.

Agoodbookmaybeamongthebestoffriends.Itisthesametoday

adversityordistress.Italwaysreceivesuswiththesamekindness;

Menoftendiscovertheiraffinitytoeachotherbythemutuallove

theyhaveforabookjustastwopersonssometimesdiscoverafriendby

theadmirationwhichbothentertainforathird.Thereisanoldproverb,

'Loveme,lovemydog."Butthereismorewisdominthis:^^Loveme,

lovemybook.^^Thebookisatruerandhigherbondofunion.Mencan

think,feel,andsympathizewitheachotherthroughtheirfavoriteauthor.

Theyliveinhimtogether,andheinthem.

Agoodbookisoftenthebesturnofalifeenshriningthebestthat

lifecouldthinkout;fortheworldofaman'slifeis,forthemostpart,but

theworldofhisthoughts.Thusthebestbooksaretreasuriesofgood

words,thegoldenthoughts,which,rememberedandcherished,become

ourconstantcompanionsandcomforters.

Bookspossessanessenceofimmortality.Theyarebyfarthemost

lastingproductsofhumaneffort.Templesandstatuesdecay,butbooks

survive.Timeisofnoaccountwithgreatthoughts,whichareasfresh

todayaswhentheyfirstpassedthroughtheirauthor'sminds,agesago.

Whatwasthensaidandthoughtstillspeakstousasvividlyaseverfrom

theprintedpage.Theonlyeffectoftimehavebeentosiftoutthebad

products;fornothinginliteraturecanlongsurviveebutwhatisreally

good.

Booksintroduceusintothebestsociety;theybringusintothe

presenceofthegreatestmindsthathaveeverlived.Wehearwhatthey

saidanddid;weseetheasiftheywerereallyalive;wesympathizewith

them,enjoywiththem,grievewiththem;theirexperiencebecomesours,

andwefeelasifwewereinameasureactorswiththeminthescenes

whichtheydescribe.

Thegreatandgooddonotdie,eveninthisworld.Embalmedin

books,theirspiritswalkabroad.Thebookisalivingvoice.Itisan

intellecttowhichonstilllistens.

Thecelebratedmathematician,EdmundStone,wouldneverhave

publishedamathematicaldictionary,neverhavefoundthekeytoscience

ofmathematics,ifhehadgivenhissparemomentstoidleness,hadthe

littleScotchlad,Ferguson,allowedthebusybraintogotosleepwhilehe

tendedsheeponthehillsideinsteadofcalculatingthepositionofthestars

Laborvanquishesallnotinconstant,spasmodic,orill-directedlabor;

thepriceofnobleandenduringsuccess.

Ambition

Itisnotdifficulttoimagineaworldshortofambition.Itwould

probablybeakinderworld:withoutdemands,withoutabrasions,without

disappointments.Peoplewouldhavetimeforreflection.Suchworkas

theydidwouldnotbeforthemselvesbutforthecollectivity.Competition

wouldneverenterin.conflictwouldbeeliminated,tensionbecomea

thingofthepast.Thestressofcreationwouldbeatanend.Artwouldno

longerbetroubling,butpurelycelebratoryinitsfunctions.Longevity

wouldbeincreased,forfewerpeoplewoulddieofheartattackorstroke

causedbytumultuousendeavor.Anxietywouldbeextinct.Timewould

stretchonandon,withambitionlongdepartedfromthehumanheart.

Ah,howunrelievedboringlifewouldbe!

Thereisastrongviewthatholdsthatsuccessisamyth,and

ambitionthereforeasham.Doesthismeanthatsuccessdoesnotreally

exist?Thatachievementisatbottomempty?Thattheeffortsofmenand

womenareofnosignificancealongsidetheforceofmovementsand

eventsnownotallsuccess,obviously,isworthesteeming,norall

ambitionworthcultivating.Whichareandwhicharenotissomething

onesoonenoughleamsonone'sown.Buteventhemostcynicalsecretly

admitthatsuccessexists;thatachievementcountsforagreatdeal;and

thatthetruemythisthattheactionsofmenandwomenareuseless.To

believeotherwiseistotakeonapointofviewthatislikelytobe

deranging.Itis,initsimplications,toremoveallmotivesforcompetence,

interestinattainment,andregardforposterity.

Wedonotchoosetobeborn.Wedonotchooseourparents.Wedo

notchooseourhistoricalepoch,thecountryofourbirth,ortheimmediate

circumstancesofourupbringing.Wedonot,mostofus,choosetodie;

nordowechoosethetimeorconditionsofourdeath.Butwithinallthis

realmofchoicelessness,wedochoosehowweshalllive:courageouslyor

incowardice,honorablyordishonorably,withpurposeorindrift.We

decidewhatisimportantandwhatistrivialinlife.Wedecidethatwhat

makesussignificantiseitherwhatwedoorwhatwerefusetodo.Butno

matterhowindifferenttheuniversemaybetoourchoicesanddecisions,

thesechoicesanddecisionsareourstomake.Wedecide.Wechoose.

Andaswedecideandchoose,soareourlivesformed.Intheend,

formingourowndestinyiswhatambitionisabout.

WhatIHaveLivedFor

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegoverned

mylife:thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearable

pityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,have

blownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourse,overadeepoceanof

anguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.

Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasyecstasysogreat

thatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestofmylifeforafewhours

forthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelieveslonelinessthat

terriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksoverthe

rimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesought

it,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,

theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.

ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,

thisiswhatatlast1havefound.

WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedto

understandtheheartsofmen.Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine.

AndIhavetriedtoapprehendthePythagoreanpowerbywhichnumber

holdsswayabovetheflux.Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.

Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardthe

heavens.Butalwaysitbroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpain

reverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedby

oppressors,helplessoldpeopleahatedburdentotheirsons,andthe

wholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhat

humanlifeshouldbe.Ilongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoo

suffer.

Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladly

liveitagainifthechancewereofferedme.

Whenlovebeckonstoyou,followhim,thoughhiswaysarehard

butnotallofyourlaughter,andweep,butnotallofyourtears.Love

givesnaughtbutitselfandtakesnaughtbutfromitself.Lovepossesses

not,norwoulditbepossessed,forloveissufficientuntolove.

Lovehasnootherdesirebuttofulfillitself.Butifyouloveandmust

havedesires,letthesebeyourdesires:

Tomeltandbelikearunningbrookthatsingsitsmelodytothe

night.

Toknowthepainoftoomuchtenderness.

Tobewoundedbyyourownunderstandingoflove;

Andtobleedwillinglyandjoyfully.

Towakeatdawnwithawingedheartandgivethanksforanother

dayofloving;

Torestatthenoonhourandmeditatelove'secstasy;

Toreturnhomeateventidewithgratitude;
