Theword“emoji”comesfromJapanese,literallymeaning“picturecharacter”.Emojisaresmallsymbolsrepresentingideas,emotionsorfeelings.Theycomeindifferentcategories,suchasfacesandpeople,plantsandanimals,andfoodanddrink.5
WhenfirstintroducedinJapanin1999,emojiswerelimitedto176simpledesigns.Nowtherearemorethan3,000emojisthatexpanduponthewayinwhichwecommunicate.Duetotheirpopularity,theOxfordDictionariesWordoftheYearin2015was,forthefirsttimeever,apictographinsteadofatraditionalword.6
