centuryasauthorssuchasayoungmannamedStephenCranebegantoembracealiterarystyle

forgedinEuropeabitearlierandwhichwouldcometobeknownasnaturalism.Cranewasbornto

parentsintheministryandgrewupinahouseholdgroundedinreligiousbeliefsandcontext.Yet,

beforelong,Cranehad,forthemostpart,rejectedreligionandtheideaofdivineinterventionin

favorofamorehands-onapproachtotheworld.Ashebegantodevelopasawriter,naturalist

themesofmanversusnature,theunrelentingpowerofnature,andanobjectiveviewoftheworld

begantodominatehiswriting.Naturalistsattemptedtodepictthemostaccurateviewoflife
