SuccessfulresponsetotreatmentwillresultinthedisappearanceofHBsAg,HBV-DNA,andseroconversiontoHBeAg.

OccurswhenapersonbecomesinfectedsimultaneouslywithHBVandHDV.Themostcommonoutcomeiscompleterecoveryandclearanceofbothviruses.Inlessthan5%ofcases,patientsdevelopchronicinfections.Inabout1%ofcases,infectionresultsinfulminanthepatitis.

Superinfection:

OccurswhenapersonwhoisalreadyseropositiveforHBVbecomesinfectedwithHDV.Itisassociatedwithmoresevereclinicaloutcomesthanco-infectionwithHDV.Fulminanthepatitisdevelopsinabout5%ofcases.80-90%ofinfectionswillbecomechronic,increasingtheratewithwhichpatientsdevelopcirrhosis.Thechanceofdevelopinghepatocellularcarcinoma(livercancer)alsoincreases.
