DawsondidnothaveanyofthenaturalconveniencesofcitieslikeLondonorParis.People

wentthereforgold.Theytravelledoversnow-coveredmountainsandsailedhundredsofmilesup

icyrivers.ThepathtoDawsonwascoveredwiththirtyfeetofwetsnowthatcouldfallwithout

warming.Anavalanche(雪崩)onceclosedthepath,killing63people.Formanywhomadeitto

Dawson,however,therewardswereworththedifficulttrip.Ofthefirst20,000peoplewhodug

forgold,4,000gotrich.About100ofthesestayedrichmenfortherestoftheirlives.

Butnomatterhowrichtheywere,Dawsonwasnevercomfortable.Necessitieslikefoodand

woodwereveryexpensive.Butsoon,thegoldthatDawsondependedonhadallbeenfound.The

citywascrowdedwithdisappointedpeoplewithnointerestinsettlingdown,andwhentheyheard

therewerenewgolddiscoveriesinAlaska,theyleftDawsonCityasquicklyastheyhadcome.
