crusader's*sword,standingonareeloffilmwithfivespokes,signifyingtheoriginalbranchesoftheAcademy:

Bornin1928,yearswouldpassbeforetheAcademyAwardofMeritwasofficiallynamed"Oscar".Industry

insidersandmembersofthepresscalledtheaward"theAcademystatuette","thegoldentrophy"or"thestatueof

merit".Theentertainmenttradepaper,WeeklyVariety,evenattemptedtopopularize"theironman".Theterm

neverstuck.

ApopularstoryhasbeenthatanAcademylibrarianandeventualexecutivedirector,MargaretHerrick,thoughtthe

statuetteresembledheruncleOscarandsaidso,andthatasaresulttheAcademystaffbeganreferringtoitas

Oscar.

Nohardevidenceexiststosupportthattale,butinanycase,bythesixthAwardsPresentationin1934,Hollywood

columnistSidneySkolskyusedthenameinhiscolumninreferencetoKatharineHepburn'sfirstBestActresswin.

TheAcademyitselfdidn'tusethenicknameofficiallyuntil1939.

Sinceitsconception,theOscarstatuettehasmetexactinguniformstandards-withafewnotableexceptions.In

the1930s,juvenileplayersreceivedminiaturereplicas*ofthestatuette;aventriloquist*EdgarBergenwas

presentedwithawoodenstatuettewithamoveablemouth;andWaltDisneywashonoredwithonefull-sizeand

sevenminiaturestatuettesonbehalfofhisanimatedfeatureSnowWhiteandtheSevenDwarfs.Between1942

and1944,insupportofthewareffort,Oscarsweremadeofplaster.AftertheWar,winnersturnedinthe

temporaryawardsforgoldenOscarstatuettes.

ThetraditionalOscarstatuette,however,hasn'tchangedsincethe1940s,whenthebasewasmadehigher.In1945,

thebasewaschangedfrommarbletometalandin1949,AcademyAwardstatuettesbegantobenumbered,

startingwithNo.501.

Approximately50OscarsaremadeeachyearinChicagobythemanufacturer,R.S.Owens.Iftheydon'tmeet

strictqualitycontrolstandards,thestatuettesareimmediatelycutinhalfandmelteddown.

EachawardisindividuallypackedintoaStyrofoam*containerslightlylargerthanashoebox.

Eightofthesearethenpackedintoalargercardboardbox,andthelargeboxesareshippedtotheAcademyoffices

inBeverlyHillsviaairexpress,withnoidentifiablemarkings.

OnMarch10,2000,55AcademyAwardsmysteriouslyvanishedenroutefromtheWindyCity*totheCityof

Angels.Ninedayslater,52ofstolenstatuetteswerediscoverednexttoaDumpster*intheKoreatownsectionof

LosAngelesbyWillieFulgear,whowaslaterinvitedbytheAcademytoattendtheOscar2000ceremoniesasa

specialguest.

Foreightdecades,theOscarshavesurvivedwar,weatheredearthquakes,andevenmanagedtoescapeunscathed*

fromcommonthieves.Since1995,however,R.S.Owenshasrepairedmorethan160statuettes."Maybe

somebodyusedchemicalsonthemtopolishthemandthechemicalsrubbedrightthroughthelacquer*andinto

thegold,"explainsthecompanypresident."Ormaybepeoplestoredthemsomeplacewheretheycorroded."

Althoughhestressesthatthestatuetteismadetoendure,SiegeloffersthissageadvicetoallOscarwinners:"Ifit
