TheneedtoprotectAntarcticafromtouristsbecomesevengreaterwhenweconsiderthefactthatthereisnogovernmenthere.Antarcticabelongstonocountry.Whoismakingsurethatthepenguins,plantsandseaaresafeNooneisresponsible.ItistruethatthenumberoftouristswhovisitAntarcticaeachyearissmallercomparedtothenumberofthosewhovisitotherplaces.However,theseotherplacesarecontrolledbylocalgovernments.Theyhaveaninterestinprotectingtheirnaturalenvironments.WhoisconcernedabouttheenvironmentofAntarcticaThescientist,tobesure,butnotnecessarilythetourcompaniesthatmakemoneyfromsendingpeoplesouth.

Ifwedon’tprotectAntarcticafromtourism,theremaybeseriousconsequencesforusall.Wemightlosetheresultsofscientificresearchprojects.It’spossiblethattheseresultscouldteachussomethingimportantaboutthecausesandeffectsofclimatechange.Somefragileplantsandanimalsmightdieanddisappearforever.ThiscoulddamagethebalanceofanimalandplantlifeinAntarctica.Weknowfrompastexperiencethatwhenthingsgetunbalanced,harmfulchangescanoccur.
