TheDolomite“Problem”

Dolomiteisbelievedtoformwhenmagnesiumthathasbeen concentratedinseawaterreplacescalciumcarbonateina previouslydepositedlimestone. Today,dolomiteonlyformsinafewareasoftheworldwhereintense evaporationofseawaterconcentratesthemagnesium. ExtensiveareasofcarbonaterocksofPrecambrian, Paleozoic,andMesozoicagehavebeenalteredtodolomite. Dolomitizationmayberelatedtotimesofhighsealevel worldwide,underfavorableclimaticconditions.
