RobertFletcher,aUniversityofFloridaprofessorwhodirectsasnailkitemonitoringprogram,saidtheinvasivespecieswasfirstspottedin2023.Withinafewyears,ithadexpandedthroughmuchoftheEverglades.“Anditwasaroundthattime,”hesaid,“thatwestartedtoseesnailkitenumberincrease.”

Noone’ssureabouthowtheexoticsnailswereintroducedintotheEverglades.They’rerelatedtoFlorida'sapplesnailsandarecommonlyusedinhomeaquariums(鱼缸).Theinvader,theislandapplesnail,islargerthanitsFloridacousin.Itlayseggsinthethousandsvisibleonthestalks(茎)ofmanyofthemarshplants.

EffortstorestoreFlorida'sEvergladeshavehelpedthesnailkiteandrestorednativevegetation.It'sbeenintheworksformorethan30yearswithacostofmorethan$20billion.Butprogressisincreasinggradually,althoughhardtomeasure.Inthemeantime,scientistssaytheinvasivesnailmayhavehelpedpullFlorida'sendangeredsnailkitebackfromthethreatofextinction.

Theteamgatheredmorethan300samplesofairbornemicroplasticsfrom11sitesacrossthewesternUS.Thesewerethebasisforatmosphericmodelingthatestimatedthecontributionfromdifferentsources,andwasthefirstsuchstudytodoso.

TheyfoundthatroadswerethedominantfactorinthewesternUS,linkedtoabout85percentofthemicroplasticsintheair.Thesearelikelytoincludeparticlesfromtiresandbrakepadsonvehicles,andplasticsfromlitterthathadbeenbrokendown.

Theresearchersextendedtheirmodelingworktoagloballeveland.thissuggestedthatwhileroadsarealsolikelytobethedominantdriverofairborneplasticsinEurope,SouthAmericaandAustralia,plasticsparticlesblownupfromfieldsmaybeamuchbiggerfactorinAfricaandAsia.
