Teenagerswhospendmoretimeonafter-schoolactivitiesandhavelessthantwohoursofscreentimeafterschoolaremorementallyhealthy,accordingtoastudypublishedinthejournalPreventiveMedicine.ThenewstudywascarriedoutbyresearchersfromtheUniversityofBritishColumbia.

Thestudyusedinformationcollectedfrommorethan28,000seventh-gradeCanadianstudentsbetween2023and2023.Thestudentsfirstansweredquestionsabouttheirscreentimeafterschool,includinghowmuchtimetheyspentwatchingTV,onNetflixoronsomethingelse.Then,thestudentsreportedhowmanydaystheyhadtakenpartinafter-schoolactivitiessuchassportsorartsprograms.Afterthat,researchersaskedstudentstodescribetheirstateofmind.Forexample,whengivenastatementsuchas"IstartmostdaysthinkingthatIwillhaveagoodday",theycouldchoosehowmuchtheyagreedwithitonascale.

Someoftheresultswereexpected,researcherssaidinthestudy.Studentswithnoafter-schoolactivitiesusuallyhadhighlevelsofscreentime,forexample.Andtheyexpectedgirlswouldscorehigheronnegativeindicators(消极指标)ofmentalhealth,asearlierresearchhadfoundthattheytendedtohavehigherlevelsoftensioncomparedtoboys.

Whatisnoteworthy,researcherssay,isthatevenamongstudentswhotookpartinafter-schoolactivities,46%stillwentbeyondtherecommendedscreentimeoftwohours.Atthesametime,67%ofstudentswhodidn'ttakepartinafter-schoolactivitiesalsohadmorethantwohoursofscreentime.Together,thisrepresentshighscreentimeamongteenagersgenerally.
