Readthefollowingpassagecarefully,andthenanswerallthequestions.
Inthispassage,Mary,thewriter,andherhusband,Willie,whohavejustmovedfromEnglandtoSouthernSpain,arelookingforahousetobuy.Theyhavealreadyinspectedseveralproperties.
Thenexthouse,Carlos’shouse,wassurelywhatweneeded.Iwasfastfallinginlovewithit.
Itwasasquattwo-storeybuilding,overahundred-and-fiftyyearsold,withtinywindowsandturretsthatgaveitthelookofaminiaturefortress.We’dfounditbyaskingatanearbyshop.Thisshopwasmerelysomeone’sfrontroomsuitablymodified.Assoonasweasked,Sebastian,
theowner,tookoverwithgreatenthusiasm.Hewasshortandstoutwithahoarsevoicethat5
soundedasifhisvocalcordshadbeengrated.Alifetimeofworkingintheopenhadlefthimwithatendencytoaddresseveryoneasiftheywerestandinginthenextfield.Nowhewentintoafrenzyofactivityforus.
Firsthegaveussomeofhishome-brewedwine;hethenofferedushisvineyard,anotherpiece
oflandsuitableforcattlerearing,andsomefieldshiswifeownedthathadadozenalmondtrees10
risingfromthescrub.HethenfilledabagforuswithsweetpotatoesfromhismarketgardenandgaveussomepowerfulSpanishsausagetotaste.Weeventuallygotbacktothesubjectof‘Carlos’shouse’.Noproblem.Nicehouse–he’dthoughtofbuyingithimselftwoyearsbefore;he’dtalktothefamilyandhaveoneofthemwaitingthereforusthenextday.

PromptlyatfivewearrivedtofindadisconsolateandreproachfulSebastian.

“But,Sebastian,wesaidfiveo’clockandit’actlyfive.”Weshowedourwatches,whichheviewedwithscepticism.“Itiactlyfive.That’swhatweagreed.” 20
“Ifyou’dcomeearlieritwouldhavebeenfine.”Acustomercomingintotheshopdistractedhim.Onceshelefthespoketousagain,nowmoreinsorrowthaninanger.“Quitestraightforwarditwouldhavebeen…ifyou’dbeenhere.Hewaitedfortwohours.”
“Wesaidfive,that’swhatwesaid,five.”Unconsciouslywewereadoptinghisstyleasifrepetition
wouldsortoutourdifferences.Heappearednottohearandlookedatusmorosely.Wehad 25
betrayedhisconfidence.Finally,withasigh,hechangedtack.
“Isupposewemightstillfindhimathishouse.Hghtattheotherendoftown,buthe’sprobablygoneoutnow.Fancyturningupatthishour.”
Theotherendoftownwasafour-minutewalkaway,butSebastianclearlylikedtokeeptohis
ownend.Atthispointwerealisedthatwehadbeenoperatingindifferenttimezones.Tohim, 30
fiveo’clockwasafterlunchandthat’swhathehadtoldtheowners.Isawawayoutofitwithaformulathatwouldcomeinusefulonmanyalateroccasion.
“Ilyouwhat:we’llcomeanotherday.Weareseriouspeopleandweareverypunctual,yousee–we’reBritish.”
WeagreedatimeanyandarrivedtofindSebastianandCarlos,theeldestofthefamily, 35
