Ina2022intervieithABCNews,WozniakrecountedhowandwhenhefirstmetSteveJobs.Hesaid:"Wefirstmetin1971duringmycollegeyears,whilehewasinhighschool.Afriendsaid,'youshouldmeetSteveJobs,becausehelikeselectronicsandhealsoplayspranks.'Soheintroducedus."AndfromthephotowecanseethatJobsandWozhaveareallyclosefriendship.Hereisasmallstoryabouttheirearlystart.

Thereisatemptationtorushtocanonizeyourmemory.Thereisnoneedtodoso.Youstandtallenoughasahumanbeingofuniquequalitiesnottoneedtobeseenasasaint.Indeedtosanctifyyourmemorywouldbetomissoutontheverycoreofyourbeing,yourwonderfullymischievoussenseofhumorwiththelaughthatbentyoudouble,yourjoyforlifetransmittedwhereveryoutookyoursmile,andthesparkleinthoseunforgettableeyes,yourboundlessenergywhichyoucouldbarelycontain.

Butyourgreatestgiftwasyourintuition,anditwasagiftyouusedwisely.Thisiswhatunderpinnedallyourwonderfulattributes.Andifwelooktoanalyzewhatitwasaboutyouthathadsuchawideappeal,wefinditinyourinstinctivefeelforwhatwasreallyimportantinallourlives.

WithoutyourGod-givensensitivity,wewouldbeimmersedingreaterignoranceattheanguishofAIDSandHIVsufferers,theplightofthehomeless,theisolationoflepers,therandomdestructionoflandmines.Dianaexplainedtomeoncethatitwasherinnermostfeelingsofsufferingthatmadeitpossibleforhertoconnectwithherconstituencyoftherejected.

Andhereweetoanothertruthabouther.Forallthestatus,theglamour,theapplause,Dianaremainedthroughoutaveryinsecurepersonatheart,almostchildlikeinherdesiretodogoodforotherssoshecouldreleaseherselffromdeepfeelingsofunworthinessofwhichhereatingdisordersweremerelyasymptom.

Shesparkledofcourse,butIwouldrathercherishthedaysIspentwithherinMarchwhenshecametovisitmeandmychildreninourhomeinSouthAfrica.IamproudofthefactthatapartfromwhenshewasonpublicdisplaymeetingPresidentMandela,wemanagedtocontrivetostoptheever-presentpaparazzifromgettingasinglepictureofher.

TheseweredaysIwillalwaystreasure.Itwasasifwe'dbeentransportedbacktoourchildhood,whenwespentsuchanenormousamountoftimetogether,thetwoyoungestinthefamily.

Fundamentallyshehadn'tchangedatallfromthebigsisterwhomotheredmeasababy,foughtwithmeatschoolandenduredthoselongtrainjourneysbetweenourparents'homeswithmeatweekends.Itisatributetoherlevel-headednessandstrengththatdespitethemostbizarrelifeimaginableafterherchildhood,sheremainedintact,truetoherself.

Thereisnodoubtthatshewaslookingforanewdirectioninherlifeatthistime.Shetalked

endlesslyofgettingawayfromEngland,mainlybecauseofthetreatmentshereceivedatthehandsofthenewspapers.

Idon'tthinksheeverunderstoodwhyhergenuinelygoodintentionsweresneeredatbythemedia,whythereappearedtobeapermanentquestontheirbehalftobringherdown.Itisbaffling.Myown,andonly,explanationisthatgenuinegoodnessisthreateningtothoseattheoppositeendofthemoralspectrum.

ItisapointtorememberthatofalltheironiesaboutDiana,perhapsthegreatestwasthis;thatagirlgiventhenameoftheancientgoddessofhuntingwas,intheend,themosthuntedpersonofthemodernage.

ShewouldwantustodaytopledgeourselvestoprotectingherbelovedboysWilliamandHarryfromasimilarfate.AndIdothishere,Diana,onyourbehalf.Wewillnotallowthemtosuffertheanguishthatusedregularlytodriveyoutotearfuldespair.

Beyondthat,onbehalfofyourmotherandsisters,Ipledgethatwe,yourbloodfamily,willdoallwecantocontinuetheimaginativeandlovingwayinwhichyouweresteeringthesetwoexceptionalyoungmen,sothattheirsoulsarenotsimplyimmersedbydutyandtraditionbutcansingopenlyasyouplanned.
