(1903),directedbyEdwinS.Porter
(1870~1941),followsabandofWesternoutlawsrobbingatrainandinterruptsthechronologyoftheactiononwithacutawayshowingtherescueofatelegraphoperatorwhom
the
outlaws
earlierhadtied
up.
Following
the
cutaway,
Porterintroduces
a
second
line
ofaction,
showing
theroundup

Griffith
tojoinfilminglocationsthatwerephysicallyseparatedbutadjacentintermsofthetimeandplaceofthestory.Griffithbecame
famous
forhisuse
ofcrosscutting
in
themany"ridesto
the
rescue"thatclimaxhis
films.
InTheGirlandHerTrust
(1912),
forexample,
Griffithcutsbackandforthfromapairofrobbers,
whohave→abducted←
theheroineandareescapingonarailroadpumpcar,
whoisattemptingtoovertakethembytrain.Byintercuttingtheselinesofaction,
Griffith
creates
suspense,
and
by
shortening
the
lengths
ofthe
shots,
he
accelerates
thepace.
