extent;shelearnedtopretendtobeatypicalladyifitwasnecessary.Shecouldnotgetrideofalltherebelliousaspectsdeeplyrootedinhernaturewithoutgenuineinnergrace.3.4Scarlett’slaterexperiencesAccordingtotheoldsoutherntraditionalrules,mostofgirlswouldhavetobearrangedtomarrysomeone.Scarlett’sfatherinsistedthatsheshouldgetmarriedtooneoftheTarlatantwins.Neverthelessthenthe16-years-oldgirlsfallinlovewithherneighbor,AshleyWilkes,anaristocraticyoungman.ButAshleyWilkesannouncedhisengagementtomild-manneredMelanieHamiltonatthebarbecue;shedecidedtogetmarriedtoCharlesHamilton,Melanie'sbrother,outofspite.SoontheAmericanCivilWarbrokeout,soAshleyandhernewhusbandhadtojoininthewarandfightagainstenemies.Unfortunately,herhusbanddiedwithintwomonthsbecauseofseriousmeasles.Allthatmeansshesuddenlybecameawomanafterthewarbreakoutandawidowtwomonthlater.Astothewar,theYankeearmymadeitswaytoGeorgia.Theysparedherhome,butstolethelivestockandfood.What’sworse,hermotherdiedofTyphoidfeverandotherfamilynumberswereseriouslyillatthattime.TherewasnowayforScarlettbutflednearbyAtlantawhereshehadtowithMelanieduringthewar,hopingtogettoTaratoreuniteherfamily.WiththehelpoftheopportunisticRhettButler,amanwhohadbeenfoundofhersincetheymeteachotheratthebarbecueandhallattheTwelveOaks.Timeandatlastbecameherthirdhusband,shesurvivedthewarafterovercomingalotofdifficultiesandfinallyarrivedatTaralaboriously.Onlytofindthatherhomewasalmostinruinsandherfamilymemberswerebarelysurviving.Allofasudden,sherealizedshelostalltheloveandwasthrownintoastrangeandcruelworldwithnothingtoeat.Knowingthatshewouldsufferalotfromwhatthewarhadbroughtabout,apooranddamagedfamily,shesworethatshewouldtryallkindsofwaystogetherandherfamilythoughdifficultiesandneverbehungryagain:IfIhavetolie,steal,cheatorkill,asGodasmywitness,I’llneverbehungryagain!NowIfindmyselfinaworldwhichformeisworsethandeath.Aworldinwhichthereisnoplaceforme.Ultimately,thewarwasendupwiththesoutherninevitablefailure.Whileallthesouthernwerecryingbitterly,ScarlettwasthinkingabouthowtosavetheO’Hara’s’plantation.Extremelyhelplessasshewas,shewalkedoutherboudoirandmanagedtogointobusinessbyherselfthoughtwomenwerenotallowedtodosoatthattime.PovertywassoterriblethatScarletttriedallhercouldtomakealivingandfeedthefamilyincludingcajolinghersister’fiancé,FrankKennedy.Duringallthesethings,RhettButlerkeptpayingmuchattentiontoScarlett,andtriedtodoherafeverifitwasnecessary.Whenshefoundtheycouldnotaffordtheextrataxes,sheaskedAshleyforadvice,buthecoulddonothingbutsighing.ShethoughtofRhettButler,atrickyspeculater.Moreimportantly,sheknewthathewasalittlefondofher.Thenshecouldmakefulluseofthistogetsomemoney.Poorasshewas,shepretendedtobeawell-bredladytoseducehim.Shewouldbewillingtogetmarriedtohimortobehismistress,ifhecouldgiveherenoughmoneytopaythetaxeson.ButwhenRhettButlerrealizedthatScarlettjustwantedtogetmoneyfromhimtopaythetaxesoninsteadofcaringabouthimsincerely,herefusedtogiveherahand.However,ScarlettfoundFrankKennedywasrichenoughtohelphergetthrough,soshetriedtocajolehimwithouthesitation.\o"添加到单词本"Andshedidit.Atlastthenot-so-grievingwidowmarriedthemanshedidnotloveatallinordertogetsomefinancialhelptosavethefamily'sbelovedhome.MeanwhileScarletthadbeenbusywithworkingonthefarmwithhersistersandengaginginbusinessdeals\o"添加到单词本"allbyherself.inspiteofotherpeople’sdissuasionandobjection,shedecidedtomarryRhettButlerhavingexperiencingalot.Afterthat,shegotgreatfinancialsatisfactionfromhernewhusband.Soonshegavebirthtoabeautifulgirl.RhettButlerdevotedmostofhisattentiontobringinguptheirdaughter.Unfortunately,thegirldiedwhenshetriedtohurdles.Regardlessofdoctor’sadvice,MelanieHamiltonscarifiedherlifetryingtogiveanotherbaby.Butshefailed.ItseemedthatAshleylosteverythingaftershedied,andmorescaredthanScarlett.Allofasudden,ScarlettrealizedthatshedidnotloveAshleyactually.Itwasjustbecausehewasnotasaddictedtoherastheothers.Butitwastoolate,Rhetttotallylosthopeforher.HehaddeterminedtoleavetheirhomeaswellasScarlett.AsforScarlett,allthelightsoflifedisappeared.Butshedidnotgiveup:“I’llthinkofitalltomorrow,atTara.Icanstanditthen.Tomorrow,I’llthinkofsomewaytogethimback.Afterall,tomorrowisanotherday.”(Margaret,1973:36p.644)Chapterfourmakealiving4.1BeforethewarNeverhadScarlettworriedabouthowtomakealivingwhenshewasayounggirl,livingwithherparents.Whatshecaredaboutwaspartiesandbeautifulclothes.4.2DuringthewarWiththehelpofRhett,Scarlettgothomeeventually.Thewarwasterrible.Themostimportantthingwastogetsomefoodtoeat,soScarletttriedtofindsomethingonherowninsteadofjustdependingonhertwoyoungersisterswhoarelazyandthin.Eventheirthreeslavessaidtheywerenotexperiencedinworkingonthefarm.Havingrealisticallyrealizedthatpovertywasreallyterrible,shemadeuphermindtomakealivingbyallkindsofmeans:IfIhavetolie,steal,cheatorkill,asGodasmywitness,I’llneverbehungryagain!NowIfindmyselfinaworldwhichformeisworsethandeath.Aworldinwhichthereisnoplaceforme.Allofthesetroublesmadeherascoldasmarble.Asaresult,everyofthefamilynumberswereafraidofher.4.3AfterthewarEventually,thewarcametoanendandthenorthwasdefeatedwithnodoubt.Thew
