1.Unitofstudyinformation

Thiscoursefocusesthepointsofanalogicalreasoning,comparativereasoning,

induction,andapplicationofcriticalreasoningstrategiestopracticalandtheoretical

problems.Thecourseisconcernedwiththedevelopmentofpotentialcapacitiesin

thepartofmindknownas“intellect”.Thinkingactivitiesareorganizedaftertheories

introduction.Itisdesignedtogainthinkingcapacitybypracticeratherthandry

lecture.

2.Pre-requisiteunitsandassumedknowledge

BasicEnglishreadingandwritingskills.

3.Learningaimsandoutcomes

Uponcompletionofthiscourse,thestudentsshouldbeableto:

ideasthatrunone’slife.

10%-Attendance

10%-Comments/questionsoneachday’sreadings

20%-Performanceindiscussionsection

20%-Homework

40%-ExamsandQuizzes

5.Policies

AttendancePolicy

Attendanceinclassismandatoryforallstudentsenrolledinthecourse.Anyexcused

absencemustbediscusseddirectlywiththeteacher.Beinglatetoclasswithin15

minuteswillberecordedas1LATEandbeinglateover15minuteswillberecorded

as1ABSENCE.3LATESequalto1ABSENCE.20%absencesofthetotalteaching

hourswillcauseanF(afailinggrade)directly.However,studentsarestillwelcometo

continuetoattendclass.Fstudentshavenorighttodropthiscourseanymore.Each

unexcusedabsencewillresultintheloweringoftheattendancegradeby1point.

Eachexcusedabsencewillresultintheloweringoftheattendancegradeby0.5

point.

ParticipationPolicy

Studentsshouldparticipateintheirchosenclassesactivelyandeffectively.The

ParticipationGradeisrelatedtotheAttendanceGrade.Students’finalattendance

gradeisthemaximumoftheirparticipationgrade.

Participationgradewillbebasedonavarietyoffactorsincluding,butnotlimitedto

takingpartinclassdiscussionsandactivities,completingassignments,beingableto

answerquestionscorrectly,obeyingclassrules,andbeingpreparedforclass,

frequentvisitingyourinstructorsandchattinginEnglishduringtheirofficehoursis

highlyrecommended.

PolicyonAssignmentsandQuizzes

Studentsshouldfinishtheirassignmentscompletelyandpunctually.Assignment

shouldbesubmittedonthedateappointedbytheinstructor.Ifastudentcannot

handintheassignmentontime,thereasonableexcusewillbeneeded.Late

assignmentswillreceiveamaximumgradeof80.Anassignmentthatislatefor3

dayswillbecorrectedbutreceive0.

Youarerecommendedprintallyourassignmentintheuniformformatwiththe

headingofStudent’sPledgeofnocheating.Writtenassignmentorprintedones

withouttheuniformheadingofpledgewillreceiveamaximumgradeof80.

Itismandatorytohaveweekendassignmenteveryweek.Anyweekendassignment

shouldbesubmittedonfirstclassofnextweek.

Itismandatorytohaveholidayassignmentonthepublicholidays.Anyholiday

assignmentshouldbesubmittedonthefirstdayonreturningtoschool.

Studentsarerequiredtodoamultitudeofpresentationsduringthecourse.

Plagiarism

AnyformofcheatingisNEVERtolerated.AnystudentONCEcaughtcheatingona

quiz,assignmentorexaminationwillreceivea0forthatparticularworkofthewhole

semester.Atthebeginningofthesemesterthedefinitionofplagiarismwillbe

carefullyexplained.Whenanythoughtsorwritingsofanotherpersonareused,the

sourcesmustbeclearlyidentified(usingquotes,bibliographyandgivingreference).

ClassroomPolicies

1.Noeating,cellularphones,electronicdictionaries,smoking,chattingordrowsing

inclass.

2.PleasespeakinEnglishratherthanChineseinclass.

3.Studentsarenotallowedtoattendclasswithouttextbooks.

4.Standupwhenansweringquestions.

5.Respectclassmates’ideas,opinions,andquestionsofyourclassmates.

6.Youarewelcometovisittheinstructor’sofficeinhis/herofficehours.

7.Takegoodcareofthelaboratoryfacilities.Donotsplashwateronthedesktop.

trash-bin.

withinstructorwillaffectyourparticipationscore.
