BecauseofmyexcellentperformanceintheNationalOlympicMathematicsContestofHighSchoolStudentsin1994andmyoutstandingacademicrecordinseniorhighschool,IhadtheopportunitytobeadmittedtoPekingUniversityorTsinghuaUniversity,twomostselectiveuniversitiesinChina,waivedoftheAdmissionExamination.ButifItookthechance,Icouldn’tselectbiologicalsciencesasmymajor.SoIgaveupthepreciouschanceandtooktheAdmissionExamination.IsucceededandwasadmittedbytheDepartmentofBiochemistryandMolecularBiologyinPekingUniversity,whichranksfirstinbiologicalscienceeducationandresearchinChinaandhasraisedmanyscholarsincludingmembersofChineseAcademyofSciences.Inthefirstthreeyearsinuniversity,mycurriculumhasabroadrange,coveringbothnaturalandhumanitysciences,aswellasputtingemphasisnotonlyonbiologicalsciencesbutalsooncloselyrelatedcourses.Ihavededicatedmyenergytomystudyandhavereceivedacomplete,profoundandstricttraininginbiologicalscienceswiththecombinedstrengthofindividualandprofessorshelp.Playingbasketballisalsoasolidpartofmycampuslife.IamanactivememberinthebasketballteamoftheCollegeofLifeSciencesinPekingUniversity.Asapointguard,theorganizeroftheteamsattack,Ihavelearnedtomakethefiveplayerstobeastronggroupinagame.Lastyear,werankedthethirdinPekingUniversityCupamongthethirty-sixteams.Thisexperienceendowsmeastrongsenseofresponsibility,confidenceandteam-workingspirit.

Tobeasuccessfulscientificresearcherrequiresnotonlyacademicpotentialbutalsoindependentresearchability.Astudentwilldevelopcapabilityforindependentresearchbyworkingcloselywithascholar.Forthisreason,IenteredtheNationalLaboratoryofProteinEngineeringandPlantGeneticEngineeringandparticipatedtheGroupofProteinStructureandFunction.NowIcooperatewithtwograduatestudents,oneofwhomwillgototheHarvardMedicalSchooltocontinuehisresearchwork.Ourultimategoalistodevelopanewthrombolysisdrug,whichissupportedbytheNational863Hi-TechPlanning.(PleasecheckResearchExperiencefordetail.)Bythethreemonthshere,Ihavebeenabletodomanyexperimentsindependentlyandhaveobtainedseriousattitudeandcooperationinscientificwork.

Ihaveasublimedreamtobeoneequippedwithexceptionalexperimentskillsinadditiontoadvancedscientificandtechnologicalknowledge.InmymindPennsylvaniaStateUniversityisanidealplacetopursethegraduatestudy,whichisintellectuallyexhilaratingandchallenging.Irespectyourrigorousscientificapproach,originalideaandoutstandingachievements.IameagertojoinagroupinwhichIcanmakethebestuseofmycapabilitiesandcombinemypersonalintelligencewithgroupcooperationtofull-fillthegroup’sbenefitaswellastomakemydreamcometrue.TheDepartmentofPharmacologyisdefinitelythistype.Withthefastdevelopmentinthefieldoflifesciences,humanisgettingmoreandmoreinterestedinprobingintothenatureoflifeitselfandeverygreatachievementinthestudyoflifeissuretoputlighttoourunderstandingofourselvesandtobenefitourpeopleandsocietyasawhole.ThefieldofPharmacologyhasparticularimportancetoserveman’spurposeabove.AscientistofPharmacologyisnotonlyaresearcher,butalsothecreatorofthefutureworld.IthinkthechallengingPharmacologyisthemostsuitablefieldformetobeginmygraduatestudy,whichismorethanacontinuationofundergraduatestudyandisofnotonlyamatterofgreaterknowledge.Theaimofitistopreparestudentstoenteraprofessioninwhichtheknowledgeisputintodailyuse.Iaminterestedinthefieldofsignalpathwayintumorformation.Severalprofessorsresearchimpressedme,includingDr.Mulderandsomeotherprofessors.AfterobtainingmyPh.D.,Iplantodoresearchworkinaninstitutioneitherdomesticallyoroverseas.IbelievethatsuchapositionprovidesthelargestroominwhichIcanmakethemostenthusiasticdedicationtotheworldofsciences.
